Chapter 1889
[ 596 words ]
“Claire, hold on a second. The tech specialist I called will be here any minute.”
Claire shrugged. That was fine. As long as this officer didn’t bring in someone to help Jocelyn destroy the evidence, she didn’t care who showed up.
To her surprise, the specialist turned out to be a familiar face.
“Sorry I’m late.”
A crisp, clear voice echoed through the room. Claire instinctively turned toward the door.
“Reid? Is that you?”
“Claire?” Reid Dalton was equally surprised.
Claire shot a glance at Phoebe. “So, Reid is the backup you called in?”
Her expression practically screamed: *What exactly is the relationship between you two?*
It made sense. Zara had mentioned they were close friends, so it was logical she thought of him first.
“Phoebe is my cousin.”
Claire blinked. “Oh. At least you aren’t classmates.”
As long as they weren’t childhood sweethearts, middle school flames, or
kindergarten crushes, everything was fine!
“Right, this is my cousin. I didn’t realize you two knew each other.”
Phoebe suddenly remembered Claire calling him by a school title.
Was Claire a student at Cabinda University too?
That would explain a lot.
When Claire had offered to recover the footage, Phoebe assumed they shared the same major, marveling at the caliber of talent Cabinda University produced.
Claire clarified, “He’s my roommate’s fiancé.”
“You room with Zara?” Phoebe finally understood.
No wonder her usually aloof, stone-faced cousin was being so warm and friendly to this girl.
She was his little fiancée’s best friend.
“Yep.” Claire didn’t feel like elaborating. She quickly ushered Reid to get to work.
Reid truly was a technical genius. His company even supplied the upgraded equipment used at the police precinct.
It took him barely ten minutes to bypass the glitch.
“Take a look. The camera was malfunctioning, so it didn’t catch everything perfectly.”
Reid pulled up the restored feed. The moment Owen walked out the door, the footage clearly showed Jocelyn chasing after him and throwing her arms around him content
“Well, that certainly looks like Ms. Thorne initiated the contact, doesn’t it?”
Claire stared pointedly at Jocelyn.
Jocelyn’s face was ashen. “I just liked him. I wanted him to stay…”
The video glitched into heavy pixels for a few seconds, obscuring the struggle, but
one specific frame rendered with crystal clarity.
It was the exact moment Owen
violently shoved Jocelyn away, only for her to grab his hands, shove them against her own chest, and start screaming for help while claiming she was being assaulted.
Claire glanced over at Jocelyn, whose chin was practically glued to her chest.
Even she knew she had absolutely no face left to show.
“The evidence is indisputable. What else do you have to say for yourself?”
Phoebe was livid.
She glared at Jocelyn. “Why did you lie?”
The internet was currently exploding with the scandal, with thousands of netizens hunting down the identity of the “wealthy heir.”
Someone had already leaked that
the man was the rising star of a
certain cosmetics companynet
one
that had just launched several viral products.
It was painfully obvious that someone had deliberately leaked Owen’s identity.
Now that the truth was out, Owen requested the precinct issue an official public statement detailing the outcome of the investigation.
Phoebe felt completely betrayed by Jocelyn’s lies.
Officer Brooks immediately agreed to Owen’s request. A network-wide bulletin would
shatter whatever leverage Jocelyn thought she had.
He made a quick phone call, instructing their official media account to post the update.
“This case has now been completely resolved.”
Phoebe didn’t want to waste another breath on Jocelyn.
She turned squarely to Owen. “Mr. Churchill, I deeply apologize for my earlier
presumptions and hostile attitude.”
She bowed deeply, surprising everyone in the room.
Her demeanor was a complete 180 from when she first walked in.
Being able to admit her mistakes and correct them-Claire had to admit, there was
nothing wrong with that.
