Chapter 1739
[ 588 words ]
Mary was deeply disappointed in her son and couldn’t be bothered to care about him anymore.
However, since she was going on a long trip, she felt obligated to inform her grandson.
She had given up on Latham, and she wasn’t particularly fond of Lance either.
Still, he was her flesh and blood, and she couldn’t just abandon him completely. Lance was doing better than Latham. At the very least, he had realized his past mistakes.
Knowing he had absolutely zero chance with Claire, he had stopped obsessing over her. Now, he was entirely focused on his physical therapy and even found freelance work online to earn some money.
This version of Lance was a massive improvement over the arrogant heir he had been before the family company went bankrupt.
Mary didn’t hesitate. Once things were sorted with the Principal, she went straight to her grandson.
Lance was no longer floating on his high horse.
Having lost everything, he finally realized that without his status as the James family heir, he was nobody special.
It was incredibly difficult for someone used to making executive decisions to start from the absolute bottom.
Lance was grinding out freelance gigs online, saving every penny he could.
On average, he managed to make a couple of thousand dollars a month.
Of course, there were times when he made absolutely nothing.
Hearing his grandmother was leaving for Cabinda, Lance looked surprised.
“Are you just going for a medical exchange?”
Mary knew exactly what he was implying. “Claire invited me. There’s a highly unusual medical case over there, and she knew I’d be interested.”
So it really was Claire…
Lance wasn’t surprised.
Claire had always been closer to the older generation than any of them.
Even after cutting ties with the James family, she still treated his grandmother with the same respect.
“We’ll feel better knowing she’s looking after you. Have a safe trip.”
“Do you want me to call Uncle Pearce to drive you to the airport?” Lance couldn’t drive himself anymore.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t need to bother his uncle’s family.

“No need, I’ll take a cab. I’ll leave my car parked here with you.”
Mary had already figured everything out.
Why bother Pearce and make him miss work?
Pearce’s wife was currently holding their entire family together, and Mary didn’t want
to add to her stress.
Since Mary had heavily subsidized
Latham’s family in the past, Pearce’s wife was probably already harboring resentment.
However, Mary had long finalized the inheritance for her two sons.
Back when they were rich, they hadn’t cared about her modest assets.
Now that they were desperate, she made sure her will was ironclad and legally notarized.
Even if Pearce’s wife was currently bitter, she would eventually see that Mary had split everything exactly 50/50.
Mary moved fast. By that evening, Claire was waiting at the airport to pick her up.
Someone else had also arrived at the Cabinda airport: Quentin’s mother, Yvette Young.
After picking up Mary, Claire worried that Pandora might feel left out, so
she gave the James family
matriarch a call.

She mentioned she had brought Mary to Cabinda for a visit and asked if Pandora
had time to join them.
Pandora rejected her immediately.
“I’m busy. I went to Montara with Queenie.”
Claire was surprised. Why Montara?
Was everyone drawn to Montara recently?
“Why did you go there? Is it a vacation?”
Apex got hot early in the year, and Montara felt like spring all year round, so it was a
popular getaway.
But it was only May-wasn’t it a bit early for a summer retreat?
“No. Queenie found some clues about her son.”
“I came with her to check it out.”
