Chapter 1831
[ 599 words ]
Even though Yolande was only from the Pearce branch of the Churchill family, she was still a Churchill. Who would dare lay a hand on her?
Yolande tried to cover her face, but Claire had already seen the mark.
Giving up on hiding it, she sighed. “My mother.”
Claire’s expression darkened. “Tiffany hit you?”
She knew Tiffany was biased toward her son and constantly ordered Yolande around to mooch off the main branch, but she hadn’t expected the woman to get physical with her own daughter.
Yolande was already more obedient and sensible than most young women from affluent families. As a member of the Churchill family, she had every right to be spoiled and capricious. Yet, under Tiffany’s constant suppression, Claire could sense a deep-seated insecurity and timidity hidden beneath Yolande’s elegant and gentle facade.
It was all thanks to her own mother’s torment.
No one treated their own flesh and blood this way.
Claire suspected Tiffany harbored a twisted jealousy toward her daughter. Tiffany had to fight for everything she wanted growing up, while Yolande was born into the Churchill family, wanting for nothing.
Even though they weren’t from the main branch, the old patriarch treated his grandniece well. Since her uncles only had sons, her aunts treated Yolande like their own daughter.
If it weren’t for her dramatic mother, Yolande’s life would have been smooth sailing.
Tiffany clearly didn’t see it that way. She resented how easily her daughter obtained the life she had fought so hard for.
Her cruelty was quiet, seeping into the little details of their daily lives.
Claire was furious. How could a grown woman like Yolande endure a slap across the face from her own mother?
Yolande offered a bitter smile, tears shimmering in her eyes.
Tiffany had lashed out impulsively, venting at her dissatisfaction with life and the recent humiliations she’d suffered from both her maiden family and the Churchills onto her daughter
“I was grabbing dinner with Ewan Harding, and she saw us,” Yolande explained. “She didn’t know who Ewan was. She just thought I was dating a disabled man on purpose to spite her.”
Yolande felt terrible for Ewan. He had been caught in the crossfire, enduring a thirty- minute screaming match from her mother.
Tiffany had accused Yolande of rebelling against her, claiming that marrying a ‘useless man’ would leave her destitute. She also berated Yolande for not appreciating her efforts, bragging about the divorced man she had lined up f

Wouldn’t that be better than a cripple?
Aside from thinking the man himself was a catch, Tiffany loved that his entire family was in politics. She wanted to use her daughter’s marriage to finally overpower the main branch.
They always said ordinary citizens shouldn’t fight politicians. Couldn’t the Pearce branch climb the social ladder through a powerful son-in-law?
For years, they had lived in the shadow of the main branch. Who was she doing this for? Her family treated her like a villain, but she was only thinking of their future!
And the main branch’s attempts to stop the marriage were just their way of keeping the Pearce branch beneath them!
The Churchill Family?
They had no such ambitions. They were a loving, united family. Tiffany was the only one playing these toxic household politics.
“You didn’t tell her who Ewan is?” Claire asked.
Knowing Tiffany’s character, if she found out Ewan’s true identity, she wouldn’t just apologize—she’d move mountains to force the two together.
Even if Ewan couldn’t walk for the rest of his life, Tiffany would consider it a fantastic match.
Sacrificing her daughter’s happiness for the family’s gain was a trade Tiffany would make in a heartbeat.
