Chapter 37
Chapter 37:
“Ava? What are you doing here?†he asked as he walked over.
Ava stood up, uncertain of what excuse to give. She was exhausted by everything and didn’t want to tell him the truth. Luke would probably go straight to Ian and start a fight.
“Abigail said you left for home earlier. So why are you still here?†Luke asked, his expression full of surprise as he wondered why she had lied to them.
Ava paused, then replied,
“I was feeling sick, so I stayed in the infirmary p>
“Why didn’t you tell us? What happened to you?†Luke asked, gently holding her shoulders.
“I’m fine, Luke. Just a little weak, that’s all p>
Luke was about to say something else, but his eyes shifted to someone across the road. He asked quietly,
“Did that scoundrel do something again p>
Ava followed his gaze. A black car was parked across from the bus stop, and Ian was leaning against it, smoking.
He was here? Since when? she wondered.
She realized she’d been at the bus stop for over ten minutes and hadn’t noticed him at all—perhaps because she’d been so lost in her own thoughts.
She noticed a bus approaching.
“I have to go,†she said.
Luke grabbed her hand and insisted, “You’re sick. Let me give you a ride p>
She couldn’t refuse Luke and climbed into the front seat. He got into the car and started the engine.
As the car began to move, Ava gazed out the window.
Her eyes met a pair of dark ones. Ian was staring at her from a distance. He exhaled a cloud of smoke while watching her.

She quickly turned away, muttering under her breath, “I hate you, Ian Dawson p>
Luke’s car came to a stop in front of Ava’s house. Ava turned toward him and said, “Thanks, Luke p>
“You don’t need to thank me. In fact, I should’ve been with you when you were feeling nauseous,†Luke replied.
Ava felt truly fortunate to have a friend like Luke. He was incredibly caring and always made an effort to help her, no matter the situation.
“Come inside,†she suggested, though she wasn’t feeling well.
“It’s okay. You need rest. See you tomorrow,†Luke said with a warm smile.
Ava got out of the car and waved goodbye as he drove off.
She turned and walked toward her house, thinking her mother might not be home. She took out her keys and unlocked the door. Just as she was about to head upstairs to her room, she heard her mother’s voice from behind the closed door.
Curious, Ava stopped in her tracks and walked toward her mother’s room.
“Don’t try to convince me p>
Ava could hear her mother speaking on the phone, but she couldn’t make out the conversation. She paused, confused, as she overheard her mother’s words.
“She is my life. All I want is for her to give her responsibility to her mate and leave. I’m tired of this life. When she leaves me, I will have no reason to live p>
