Chapter 38:

Ava stepped back, feeling a pang in her chest as she heard her mother talk about her mate and the future.

She didn’t interrupt, just quietly retreated to her bedroom.

In her room, she went straight to the bathroom and turned on the shower.

Under the warm water, Ava allowed herself to cry. Her mother had worked so hard, living a life of solitude after her father’s passing. Ava wished, with all her heart, that her father had lived and they could have spent their lives together.

As the water droplets hit her skin, her mind drifted back to the night Ian had kissed her. She remembered hugging him today, and how he had responded in the storeroom. But then the rejection and his cruel words flashed through her mind. He had treated her so coldly that now, she feared him.

“Because of you, I’m dying every day,” she said, pressing her hand against her heart.

After the shower, Ava went to her mother. Her mother asked when she had returned, but Ava didn’t mention overhearing her conversation.

Her mother explained that she was off duty today, and Ava considered spending the rest of the day with her.

Then, an idea popped into her head. She grabbed her phone and dialed Abigail’s number.

“Do you want to go fight now?” Abigail asked as soon as she picked up.

“Yeah. Mom’s home today. If I go now, I won’t get caught at the pack hospital p>

“Okay, I’m coming. Make an excuse to go with me p>

“Alright p>

After hanging up, Ava got ready and went downstairs.

“Mom,” she said, approaching her mother, who was watching TV.

Angela turned to her with a smile. “My child, are you going somewhere?” she asked, glancing outside. It was getting dark.

“Mom, Abigail planned to go to an ice cream parlor. Can I go p>

Her mother eyed her outfit before replying, “Why are you asking me when you’re already dressed up p>

Ava gulped. Her mother was strict, and she wasn’t sure if she’d be allowed to go.

“Mom, please p>

Angela rose to her feet and studied her for a moment. Ava thought for sure she would be denied.

But to her surprise, her mother smiled.

“Of course, you can go. But stay away from boys, especially Alphas p>

Ava grinned at her and gave her a hug. “Thanks, Mom. I’ll be back soon p>

She quickly left the house and waited for Abigail.

After a short while, Abigail arrived. Ava got in the car, and the two headed to their destination: the pack hospital.

Once there, Abigail parked the car, and they went inside. Abigail went to the receptionist, but they soon found out there was no appointment under their names.

“How can that be possible? He told me to come today,” Abigail said, dialing the doctor’s number.

“Dr. Levi, why is the receptionist saying there’s no appointment?” Abigail asked, her tone disappointed.
