Chapter 654
Madeline:
“You know, Ron,” I said, taking a deep breath, “they’re celebrating.”
I noticed Ron sigh sadly.
“After everything they’ve done to us, they’re celebrating.” I clenched my teeth harder this time.
“That’s expected of them,” Ron muttered under his breath. “But what are they celebrating?” He scoffed. “Getting their asses beaten by you and the monster?”
He was right.
If anything, they had lost the war.
But they were celebrating something far deeper.
“Ron, even though they lost, we suffered the greatest losses.” I smiled through teary eyes. “Your mate is dead. Mine too.”
I took a deep breath and quickly wiped the tear from my cheek with the back of my hand.
“I’ve planned something amazing for the event, though.” I smiled and watched Ron’s face lose color.
“You’re planning to go there in your wolf form?” he asked, immediately assuming the worst.
“Ron,” I replied, shaking my head slightly, “I possess far more intelligence than physical strength.”
I clicked my tongue, feeling pleased with myself.
“Elgin is going to have so much fun,” I muttered under my breath. “He’ll be sorry he ever participated in a public event.”
“You seem to know a lot for someone who’s been cut off from the world,” Ron
remarked, confusion and curiosity flickering across his face.
Earlier, I had snuck out to look around and go for a run.
The crazy part?
The monster sat in the tree, watching me leave without making a sound.
It was almost as if he wasn’t the predator who had killed my husband and the others.
That was also when I learned about everything happening around us and came up with something juicy for the grand event.
After a brief silence, I realized I needed to check on Ron as well.
“How are you feeling?” I asked out of courtesy.
Otherwise, I knew his sorrow and grief wouldn’t ease so easily.
“Barely alive. Every heartbeat makes me miss her,” he murmured, tears gathering in his eyes.
“I haven’t forgotten about Yuvonne,” I told him.
He nodded, a broken smile tugging at his lips.
He appreciated me bringing her up. I knew that much.
“We need to find out who shot Yuvonne,” I said.
Taking a deep breath, I looked at him again.
“I’m about to tell you some things that are going to be hard to hear.”
My voice came out strained.
It felt as though my wolf’s awakening had instincts that had lain dormant for a long time.
Ron drew in a deep breath and braced himself.
“Tell me,” he insisted in such an innocent tone that I felt bad for him.
“Do you remember Lady Eugenia’s behavior?”
The moment I mentioned her name, his gaze shifted.
“Do you remember when Yuvonne lied about being raped by the warriors after she
arrived in the rogue community?”
It was a distant memory, but we both remembered it clearly.
“Of course I do. I’ll never forget that. But I’ve forgiven her for it.”
He started to speak, but I raised a hand to stop him.
“That’s not what I’m talking about.”
He fell silent.
“There was someone she was texting. Someone nobody paid attention to, remember?”
I watched him tilt his head.
“I think Lady Eugenia was involved. Which brings me to my next point.”
I paused a little as I remembered she used to be very close to Lady Eugenia.
“The scratch on Byron’s neck doesn’t look like a normal scratch. It looks poisoned.” My grip tightened around the bracelet.
“I think she did it intentionally.”
As the words left my mouth, I watched realization slowly settle over Ron’s face.
He was beginning to understand what I was suggesting.
I was giving him scattered information but it was all going to make sense soon.
“That night, Lady Eugenia was the
only one alone with Yuvonne, and she was the only person who was awake. Even after everyone had taken their medicine and fallen asleep, Lady Eugenia had somehow remained awake.”
I began recalling the details, feeling stupid that it hadn’t occurred to me sooner.
“I remember knocking on the door.
xet
Lady Eugenia had answered it, not
Lord John, because he had.
genuinely been asleep. Sho Vest it.”
I took a deep breath and nodded slightly.
“I’m not sure if she intended to kill me that night, but it was her. It-“
I stopped as one final piece of information hit me.
It had been brought to my attention by my wolf, Lena.
Even though I had thought she was asleep inside me, she had picked up on details
that I had missed.
“I dropped those keys while returning in a panic, not while leaving.”
The moment the words left my mouth, Ron grabbed his hair in both fists.
“That bitch-” he groaned angrily.
“And she wasn’t abducted by Elgin.
She Bodhi and left on her own.
ke has been waiting!!
chance to strike at us.”
I groaned, realizing there was one more name on the list of people I was going to
make pay.
