Chapter 686
Karla:
I had been called to this huge mansion by some warriors to attend a meeting.
In fact, I had already been paid a generous amount just to come here. So why wouldn’t I go?
I was Yuvonne’s mother, a mother-in-law of an alpha too.
I rushed to the location, and there stood a woman named Rosetta.
She was a widow. The Black Widow, in fact. The one who supposedly ate up her mates.
Her husband would just die. She was simply that unlucky.
“Wow, you have a beautiful mansion,” I said, scooting to the edge of my seat and looking around excitedly, my purse clutched in my hands.
“I know what you’re planning,” she said.
I heard her voice and frowned slightly.
She had a very soft-spoken voice, something that felt familiar, but I was certain I had never met her before.
It was also the way she looked, the way she rolled her eyes, and the way she
carried herself. There was something familiar about her.
I must have met someone just like her before because I was certain I had never met her in my life.
“About what?” I asked in confusion.
“Lady Eugenia is my mother,” she replied.
I nodded, but my heart immediately started pounding in my chest.
I had so many questions, but I had learned one thing, never question Lady Eugenia.
“I’ll pay you double. And I’ll save your life and your daughter’s too.”
Once she said that, I frowned in confusion. I didn’t know that either I or my daughter needed saving. What the heck was she talking about?
“So it would be kind of you to start speaking yourself,” she said dramatically, holding a wine glass filled with red wine.
I was going to play even more clueless, but one of her warriors walked in and threw something onto the table. It scattered everywhere.
Diamonds.
“Are these all real?” I asked.
When she nodded, I took that as permission to touch them. I started running my fingers over every single one of them, and oh, Goddess, they felt amazing.
“Now, start speaking,” she uttered.
And of course, why wouldn’t I? I had one weakness.
Money.
Wealth.
“Your mother wants me to convince Yuvonne that Madeline has never forgiven her. She also wants me to spread poison in Byron’s ear and in the ears of anyone trying
to help Madeline,” I explained while examining the diamonds one by one.
I arranged them into neat rows, making different patterns across the table.
“What else?” she insisted, her voice more commanding than ever. “And she wants me to help her get the kids. Steal them. At least Bodhi.” The moment I said that, I looked up and noticed her scoff.
“You’re a fool.”
As soon as those words left her mouth, my heart flipped inside my chest.
I knew better than to trust Lady Eugenia. She had dragged my daughter into trouble
once before.
Now I was worried.
What the fuck was she up to this time?
“My mother plans to kill both you
and your daughter. She’s done with she’ll accuse Madeline of
you.
doing it. That’s her real plan That’s why she wants your help
The way she spoke, so confidently and matter-of-factly, made my hands retreat from the diamonds.
“But why? Why won’t she just kill Madeline? I’ll help her,” I said, letting Rosetta know how honestly I wanted to be on their side.
The truth was, I really wanted Madeline dead. I hated her.
I saw no reason for her to stay alive. She had been a nuisance for a very long time,
so it didn’t make any sense why she was still in our lives.
Rosetta nodded.
“Well, I have a plan for you. My mother wants to kill you, but instead, you’ll take Yuvonne’s place. You can shapeshift, after all you’ll take her shape and sleep in her room. Then my mother will come in. You’ll wake up and start screaming.”
Rosetta leaned back in her chair.
“Of course, Yuvonne would never do that. She’s too traumatized to act that way. I deal with my warriors They’ll barge in, save you, and then you’ll accuse Lady Eugenia of terrible things while you’re still m
Yuvonne’s form.”
Rosetta explained the plan to me.
It would work.
I knew that even if I told Yuvonne everything, she wouldn’t agree to it.
She had lost a child and been through too much.
Besides, she was stupidly honest when it came to Madeline. The plan would fail immediately.
But if I took her shape, I could twist things.
And in the back of my mind, another thought lingered.
What if I didn’t just accuse Lady Eugenia?
What if I dragged Madeline into it too?
I wasn’t going to rest until that woman was dead.
“Done,” I said.
“Oh, please. When you’re leaving, take these diamonds with you. Just a little
gesture.”
Rosetta smiled, and I eagerly began stuffing the diamonds into my purse.
A few of them slipped from my hands, forcing me to crawl under the table to retrieve
them.
That night, I returned home to my daughter and then went to meet Yuvonne.
She was alone.
I fed her cookies laced not only with my shapeshifting blood but also with a small
dose of sleeping pills.
As expected, she fell asleep.
Rosetta’s warriors were already waiting outside. They picked Yuvonne up and
carried her to the car while I took her place.
Halfway through the night, I heard footsteps.
Before I could uncover my face, or before someone could uncover it like Rosetta
had promised they would, I felt a sharp, stinging pain.
A bullet struck me.
Then another realization hit.
Was that my fate?
Why would Lady Eugenia back down after seeing me? It’s not like she would think
she was looking at Yuvonne’s mother.
She had made me shapeshift and fooled me.
But it was too late.
I lay there bleeding, realizing I would be trapped in Yuvonne’s form until my body
was burned.
And even then, I would never get my real face back.
Ashes don’t have faces.
