Madeline:

“Elara,” I called to my daughter.

She was sitting by the window, looking outside at the commotion.

“Why are there so many people with torches and lights?” she complained, her lips curling downward in fear.

“Come over here,” I said, lifting her into my arms.

I looked out the window again and noticed that something just wasn’t right.

It felt like the warriors had come here to attack, but this time they weren’t careless.

They came prepared.

They had large flashlights in their hands.

Then something crashed through the cabin window and rolled inside.

It was a wolfsbane bomb.

I immediately set Elara down and ran to the room to grab a piece of cloth to wrap

around her mouth and my own, so she wouldn’t inhale the gas.

I grabbed a sweater and pulled it over her nose.

However, she was just a child.

I could already tell she was feeling dizzy.

I had inhaled some too.

As I was pulling another sweater over my own nose, I saw Kaylee starting to wake up.

That was not a good sign.

I wasn’t going to let her run away.

Instead, I pulled the sweater over her nose.

I watched her briefly wake up as her fingers curled around my hand, trying to claw

the sweater away before I knocked her out again.

By this point, countless wolfsbane bombs were rolling into the cabin.

One after another, they kept rolling in.

I looked out the window again and noticed that the warriors were attacking the monster.

The monster screeched.

Its wings flapped as it attacked one warrior after another, but the lights seemed to be slowing it down.

Still, it wasn’t enough.

That wasn’t good for me either, because I had inhaled a lot of wolfsbane by then.

I still managed to pull the sweater over my nose.

I carried Kaylee over one shoulder while holding Elara in my other arm.

Elara’s head had started to fall backward, as though she were about to pass out.

“Baby, just stay awake a little longer,” I pleaded as I kicked the back door open and rushed outside.

There was so much commotion.

A few warriors came around the back, trying to attack me.

With both girls weighing me down, I could only kick them away.

It wasn’t easy to fight them.

My mind was already becoming clouded from the wolfsbane I had inhaled.

Then, just as the warriors closed in, the monster came around the back and attacked the three warriors coming after me.

With the monster keeping them occupied, I sped down the trail.

But the other warriors spotted me.

I could hear their screams and the clashing of weapons behind me.

At one point, my legs felt so weak that I thought I would collapse.

But I didn’t.

I forced myself forward and reached the car, the same one I had driven Kaylee to the cabin in.

I threw her into the back seat.

Then I placed Elara in the passenger seat.

As I moved toward the driver’s seat, my head suddenly felt like it had completely frozen.

I slapped myself across the head to stay alert and climbed into the driver’s seat.

As soon as I sat down and fastened my seat belt, everything around me blurred. “Baby, calm down. Mommy is here,” I said to my daughter, reaching over to her. She was groaning in pain.

The wolfsbane must have been making her nose burn and itch.

The burning sensation must have been unbearable for my poor daughter.

I wanted to start the car, but I was afraid.

I couldn’t even see straight.

Everything was blurred and out of place.

What if I drove into a wall?

What if my daughter got hurt?

Then I felt the car move, but it wasn’t moving forward.

It felt like it was being lifted into the air.

Claws tore through the windows.

The roof crumpled slightly.

I realized the monster was holding the car and carrying it.

The next thing I knew, the car was completely in the air.

I turned toward the window and looked down.

People below were screaming as we were lifted higher into the air.

I couldn’t even protest.

Thankfully, my daughter and I had our seat belts on.

Kaylee was in the back.

I felt her body being tossed around like a piece of luggage.

Then, slowly, my head fell back, and I lost consciousness.

I wasn’t sure where the monster was taking us.

Or maybe it had finally decided to eat us and was taking us back to the
