“What are you saying? Madeline’s husband is here?” I asked after Ron returned.

He told us everything.

That snake who was supposed to be my mother had actually freed Sawyer from his chains.

And that alone wasn’t the biggest problem.

I mean, we could have gone to war trying to restrain him again.

The real problem was that she was claiming he could help the children.

“She could be bluffing,” Yuvonne warned him.

Of course she was suspicious. She had every right to be anxious.

This was a woman who had befriended her, only to try to kill her once she no longer wanted her around.

“The council members have heard their claims, and they’re taking them pretty seriously,” Ron revealed, slapping his forehead and looking visibly upset.

Byron sat beside me on the couch, his fists repeatedly clenching and relaxing.

I knew none of this was easy for them, and I didn’t blame them.

Just the thought that this woman had gone out of her way to cause another problem proved that some people never learned.

She could have simply gone into hiding.

But no.

She had to come back and remind everyone that as long as she was alive, nobody would be safe from her toxicity.

And this time, she had partnered with one of the deadliest creatures of all time.

“So what are we going to do? Just let them fool everyone and start making demands after claiming they can save the children?” Byron hissed, clenching his fist angrily.

“Is there anything else we can do?” Ron countered. “Listen, those people are really suffering. The minute they hear that Sawyer might actually be able to help their children, it’s pretty much game over for us. They’ll want his help, and it’s not like Sawyer and Eugenia won’t take advantage of that.”

Ron was right.

Every single thing he said was absolutely right.

“Well, we have to meet him. If he’s requested to speak with the people, the council members will force us to hear him out,” I reasoned as my phone started beeping.

I was already receiving messages from several council leaders.

People had been reaching out to them, asking whether the rumors they’d heard were true.

They wanted to know if there really was a man powerful enough to help their children, and they wanted to see him for themselves.

“Well, these people need to understand that there’s a limit to everything. This man is extremely dangerous. He’s not like Madeline, who simply helped them. If he gets

angry, he could kill them too,” Ron grumbled.

The tension in our living room only grew.

The problem was that I knew my mother, or rather, Lady Eugenia.

She was a deadly woman, and there was no telling what she might demand now that she had Sawyer on her side.

“What else did she ask for?” I questioned Ron.

He turned to me and remained silent for a moment before answering.

“Some food, some clothes. Oh, and by the way Ron gave a sarcastic smirk. “She pretty much asked for supplies for her child. And at this point, couldn’t do anything about it because the council members kept telling me that if it’s true she has Bodhi then she’s the grandmother and supposedly the only living blood relative. So, well, there you go.”

I slapped my forehead in frustration.

Except there was another family member.

Me.

But with Sawyer on their side, I doubted anyone would let me take that child from

her.

And I’ll have to talk about the crazy story of body swap.

“But wait. How did Sawyer end up here after Madeline was sent there? Did Madeline do something?”

Yuvonne looked at Ron before turning toward Byron.

None of us seemed to have an answer.

“Anyway, I think we’ll get our answers once we meet that asshole. I’m pretty sure he’s just making shit up. My mother must have told him what the people here are dealing

with convinced him that he

could get them on his side by giving them hope,” I said, still holding on to the hope that we could expose their bluff soon.

“Yeah. I mean, isn’t that what happened to Silver? She lied, and then she got

caught. Maybe Sawyer will get caught too,” Yuvonne added hopefully.

“Well then, let’s just go and get this over with because I’m seriously done. This side quest seems never-ending. And then we have friend stuck in the human world, who, for some reason, they s haven’t sent back,” Byron grumbled, running a hand through his hair, his anxiety evident.

My eyes lingered on him.

I had heard about how he used to hover around Madeline. He had been in love with

her.

That made me wonder whether all his flirting with me was because he saw me as some knockoff version of Madeline.

Except I was single, so maybe he thought he actually had a chance with me.

“Yeah, let’s go,” Ron agreed.

They were going to prepare my garden and bring Sawyer here because, obviously, I had to come up with yet another lie about why I couldn’t leave my home.

This time, I was supposedly under the weather.

Honestly, the excuses were becoming pointless. Sooner or later, I would have to tell everyone the truth.
