Madeline’s response caught me completely off guard.

My mouth fell open when I heard her.

“Wait, what does that even mean?” I asked, rushing after her and grabbing her arm, but she shoved me away.

“What I mean is that you can be with Kaylee. I’ll find a new mate of my own. At the same time, we can stay here for our children. And if that’s a problem, I’ll take my daughters and leave,” she said bitterly, nearly making my heart stop.

Even my wolf was stunned by how boldly, abruptly, and quickly she seemed ready to destroy everything we’d built because of her jealousy.

“Wow. See? This is what I meant when I said it’s so easy for her to leave you and cheat on you,” my wolf reminded me, causing me to close my eyes and grunt at him.

“But it’s not like we haven’t cheated on her,” I commented as I watched Madeline walk away.

“Well, she deserves it. She’s been a horrible person to us.”

My wolf seemed to be on board. He had no regrets, and neither did I, because I’d promised to keep Kaylee safe.

“Anyway, she’s not gonna find anyone,” my wolf commented. “She’s the president’s wife. Everybody will be very careful about messing around with her.”

He was probably right.

Madeline was just angry right now, which was understandable. Nobody liked having to share their mate.

I remained where I was before letting out the deep breath I’d been holding and turning around to enter the room again.

“Okay, listen. We need to understand one other thing,” my wolf commented.

“Although it’s true that we were in love with this woman, let’s not put all our attention on her. Because, you know, we don’t know—”

My wolf didn’t finish the sentence, making me roll my eyes at him.

“I know. I know everything. I know I can trust Kaylee. Everything you’ve told me about her makes sense,” I mumbled as I walked back into the room, watching the maids stand around while the doctor and nurses took care of her.

It took them a few hours while I sat on the couch.

Throughout that time, my wolf kept confusing me.

He constantly reminded me of the things Kaylee had accidentally said, but he also kept reminding me not to think Madeline was innocent.

He was confused.

So I had to rely on my instincts now.

Then, once the doctors and everyone else had left, Kaylee started to wake up.

I got up from the couch, walked over, and sat on the bed, holding her hand.

The minute she opened her eyes, panic struck her again. She looked around and immediately tried to get out of bed.

“No, no, wait. The doctor said you need to rest,” I said, holding her arms and pinning her down on the bed.

She just watched me silently, her mouth open.

I watched tears form in her eyes and slip from the corners, but she didn’t move a

muscle, as if I were some kind of monster who would kill her if I saw her move.

“Kaylee, what’s going on? Why do you look so scared of me?” I asked, watching her shake her head.

“I don’t know. Should I be scared of you?” she questioned.

“No. What is wrong with you? Did you forget? Didn’t we run away together?” I

asked, watching her squint her eyes slightly.

“No. But do you remember it?” she asked, constantly studying my facial expressions.

“Yes, I do,” I replied, noticing her body starting to heat up under my grasp, as if she

were so scared she might pass out again.

“You said you lost your memory,” she whispered.

“Yeah. The coma and everything did that. But I was told, and I gathered enough information to know that l was in love with you, that we ran away together, and that you lost your children afterward. But disten, that’s in the past. Why do you think I’d hurt you? Do you think I was lying when I said I loved you?”

My questions made her eyes widen.

“I need water,” she requested.

The way she asked for it made me realize how dry her throat must have been.

“Okay, sure,” I said, letting her go and reaching for the glass of water.

When I held it out to her, she slowly sat up, took the glass, and tried to drink while keeping her eyes on me, as if she were thinking about something.
