Madeline had left the office with Livia right in front of me.

Before she left, she hinted that I had some kind of history with the woman in the basement, and my mind immediately started reeling.

“I need to know more about Kaylee,” I insisted to my wolf.

It wasn’t that I was interested because I wanted to know whether Kaylee and I had ever been romantically involved.

I mean, the way Madeline had bluntly hinted at it, that seemed like a possibility, and I did not want that.

So I wanted my wolf to confirm whether we had done something as disgusting as cheating on Madeline.

But my wolf remained silent, his mouth completely zipped.

“Come on, Axe. Tell me at least a little bit. What do we know about Kaylee?” I asked, getting angry with him.

After a few minutes of silence, Axe let out a deep breath and finally uttered, “We had an affair with her.”

The minute I heard that, I dropped into the chair and wrapped my hands around my head.

I felt like crushing my skull at that moment.

Daniel had walked out to grab some files, so I was pretty much alone in my office.

And now I was alone with information I did not want.

“Why? Why would we have an affair? When was it? Was it before the marriage?” I insisted, trying to piece together anything that would help me believe I wasn’t a fucking cheater.

“Well,” my wolf uttered, “it was after our marriage.”

The minute he said that, I groaned inwardly.

“She was the wife of your friend, Alpha Graham,” Axe began to explain. “He used to abuse her. She was a very innocent, kind, gentle soul. You saw her, and you became her savior. Then you kind of convinced her that you would help her get away from her abusive husband.” My wolf paused to let me settle in with the information.

“However, when Madeline arrived, you ditched Kaylee. You betrayed that poor woman, and she ended up trapped in a lifelong, painful marriage with that abuser, who, by the way, also found out about the affair. So she started being treated even worse. People called her a slut and all sorts of names.”

As my wolf spoke, I touched my chin, thinking deeply about what he was telling me.

“Why would Madeline have her locked up in the basement?” I asked my wolf.

“Well, isn’t it obvious? Didn’t she tell Nina the other day that if she found out her husband was with someone else, she’d kill them? In Kaylee’s case, she thought Kaylee was the reason you had dufted away from her for a while. So, she is keeping her in the basement, making sure the two of you don’t meet so you can’t fulfill your promise of saving Kaylee from the abuse.”

As my wolf finished, I took a deep breath and shook my head.

“No. There has to be another reason. Madeline would never do that. She’s not that heartless,” I said, refusing to believe it, even though Madeline herself had told Nina that if she tried to threaten her marriage, she would kill her.

I didn’t care.

I couldn’t bring myself to believe Madeline would do any of that shit.

“You really wanted to know the truth. I told you. Didn’t Madeline tell you that you two have history as well?” my wolf commented with a sigh.

After that, I just couldn’t focus on work.

Daniel and I finished what we were doing, and then I decided to take the rest of my work home.

Probably because that was where I could be closest to Madeline.

When we arrived home, as expected, Madeline ignored me.

She seemed to be in leave-me-be mode, like she just wanted to get away from me.

The urge to know more about Kaylee started growing inside me.

I placed both hands on my waist and shook my head before taking off my coat and tossing it aside.

I had asked the babysitter to take care of my children while Daniel was in my home office, preparing a presentation to show me what was going on with the sickness and everything else.

At the same time, I started moving toward the basement door.

I stood outside, staring at it.

“Are you gonna go and save her?” my wolf asked, showing a lot of concern for someone who was supposedly just an affair to him then his own mate.

“I’m gonna go downstairs,” I told him as I grabbed the lock and started breaking it with my hand. “But – – -“

I stopped myself.

“Because I need to know the truth,” I said as I unlocked the door and started walking downstairs.
