Chapter 790
I wasn’t used to that.
No one had ever teased someone because of me.
I had spent far too long in this mansion to remember what it felt like to be loved- or even to be teased.
“Go ahead and bring the food,” Byron told the warrior, already taking charge of the situation.
“Oh, and by the way,” the warrior added casually “that powerful lady with special gray wolf took Elara with her. I’m sure you know.”
With that, he turned and left.
The room fell silent as we exchanged uneasy glances.
“Wait! Madeline?” Ron asked, pointing toward the door the warrior had just walked through. “Madeline has Elara?”
“Yeah,” Byron replied. “That’s what he said.”
Yuvonne immediately tried to pull her hand free from Ron’s grasp, but it was useless.
He refused to let go.
“Well, then that means at least one of the children is with Madeline.”
Giving up on trying to pull her hand free from Ron’s grasp, Yuvonne looked at everyone.
“Wait, maybe—” Byron snapped his fingers, his eyes lighting up. “Maybe Madeline found Lady Eugenia and Bodhi too.”
As soon as he said it, a new sense of hope spread through the room.
We exchanged hopeful smiles, wanting to believe that was exactly what had happened.
Then the door burst open.
Nala rushed inside, huffing and puffing, her face pale with worry.
“Nala, what is it?” I asked, watching her press a hand against her chest as she struggled to catch her breath.
“I—I went to the mountain top,” she panted, “to check on Madeline.”
Every pause she took made my heart pound harder.
“And?” I urged, my throat tightening.
“It looks like there was a battle.” She paused again, taking another shaky breath. “A
lot of people attacked the cabin.”
Silence fell over the room.
“I couldn’t find Madeline.”
Her words made every one of us spring to our feet.
“Wait a minute. You couldn’t find her? Maybe she escaped somewhere else,” Ron
said quickly.
“It has to be,” Byron agreed, forcing a hopeful smile. “There’s no way—”
He couldn’t even finish the sentence.
“I asked the people nearby,” Nala
bet
continued. “They said the cabin was attacked, and the the monster
took Madeline to the human world.”
She swallowed hard.
“Elara was with her.”
As soon as Nala finished explaining everything she knew, my heart sank.
