Chapter 809
Madeline:
“We can work on this together,” Livia said to Daniel, who was in the president’s office, helping me with the files and preparing a strong case to convince the werewolves that we were going to form a good alliance and not betray their trust.
I was working on the files, really trying to focus, but I couldn’t help noticing the way those two were acting around each other.
It seemed like Livia had a crush on Daniel, but he seemed indifferent.
He barely looked at her.
I had gathered from their past that they had been friends for a very long time.
Maybe Daniel had recently figured out that she had feelings for him, and since he didn’t feel the same way, he had decided to put some distance between them so their friendship wouldn’t be ruined.
“I don’t really need a partner on this project right now,” Daniel said as he started placing some of the patients’ files in front of me.
I walked over to Baxter’s seat and stood between it and the table.
Baxter had insisted that I work from his office, so we had two tables there now, one for me and one for him.
“These are the children showing symptoms of the same illness you said occurred at the werewolf land,” Daniel said, touching the list with his finger and trailing it down
the page.
I grabbed the file and studied it in silence for a bit.
“So the illness is very strong there, but it’s also reaching here. However, your children don’t usually show symptoms?” Livia questioned, a file in her hand as she wrote it down.
She reminded me of myself when I first became a researcher, so enthusiastic and ready to crack a case.
And then there was Daniel. He wasn’t just some helper of hers anymore.
He was also Baxter’s right-hand man, and he did his job really well.
“Well, things are different for me. I was kind of able to help the children with–” I paused as I looked at the two of them. “Um, and then my children healed permanently. Yeah, so—” I didn’t finish, changing the subject instead.
“The werewolves want to meet us. And I’m pretty sure one of their demands will be to know if I’m here and whether I can help them as well,” I said, remembering how desperate they were for my help.
“Are you going to?” Daniel questioned, leaning down on the table with his hands on
it.
“I don’t know, Daniel. They really
lot of
fucked things up, you know. They killed my adopted sister. They burned her body. They did a terrible things They abducted me, and just don’t know,” I said as I started anxiously scratching the spaces between my fingers.
“What are we gonna do about Nina?” Livia questioned, looking very annoyed with her.
I mean, we were both on the same page. To be honest, it was quite surprising how alike our thoughts were.
However, I noticed Daniel straighten his back and then scratch the back of his neck.
“I mean, she did a horrible thing to President Sawyer. Other than that, she is really good at her job.”
As soon as he said that, I narrowed my eyes at him, but I had a feeling it wasn’t a genuine comment.
My eyes moved to Livia, whose fingers curled tightly around her pencil.
“She’s a criminal, Daniel. You do know that, right?” she commented, turning her head toward him.
Daniel didn’t even look at her. He hunched over the files before letting out a cautious chuckle.
“A sexy one,”
The minute he commented, a sharp crack made both Daniel and me turn our attention toward Livia.
She had broken the pencil in her hand.
“Sorry. I think the pencil was too weak,” she commented, taking a deep breath before turning toward the window to look outside.
“Livia, I want to know about something else.” I changed the subject again, watching Daniel study her before he looked away.
There was some unspoken misunderstanding between them.
There had to be, because now it seemed like Daniel was trying to make her jealous.
“Sure, whatever it is.” Livia was back to her usual self the minute she heard that I needed to talk about something important.
“When I came here with the monster,
there was another woman brought here who is currently chained up in
our basement said to her, and she nodded.
Of course, she knew that. They had helped her chain the woman in the basement.
“I just want to know why the
monster was bringing people from
the werewolf land to the human world, and if the monster had ever taken anything from the huma world to the werewolf land as well,” I said to her, watching her place her hand on the table and then look down, almost as if she were being too cautious about the topic of conversation.
