Chapter 889
Baxter:
“Tell me something, when you asked me to stay in the human world. I told you I cannot because I am not fit,” I told Sawyer.
At first, he pouted as if I’d insulted him, so I decided to explain.
“I mean, think about it. You have a wolf too, right? And yours is an even bigger monster. That’s why they put you in here in the first place.”
Sawyer’s eyes widened, and I could almost see my plan finally clicking into place in his head.
We were two very unlucky kids whose parents had thrown them into this madhouse, where we were both being secretly treated.
My wolf had been exposed to far too much wolfsbane and silver during my sister’s attack, which meant there was a chance it could mutate.
Sometimes, I could even hear it, as though it had already awakened somewhere inside me.
That was the problem. I wasn’t even old enough for my wolf to have awakened yet, and that terrified my parents.
That was why they had brought me here.
The humans were experimenting on me, trying to control the parts of my wolf that had been damaged by the silver and wolfsbane.
It was almost the same with Sawyer.
He had told me that his parents had hidden the fact that he had a wolf.
And it wasn’t just any wolf. His was an even worse monster.
He had never told me exactly what kind of monster it was, but I knew one thing for sure: both of us were being experimented on here.
They gave us medicine to suppress our wolves. With mine, they were trying to control the damage.
With Sawyer’s, they were trying to destroy his wolf completely so he could live among humans like one of them.
“Yeah, but you know they’re giving me medicine,” Sawyer pointed out.
That answer alone told me how badly he wanted to get out of this hellhole with me.
He wanted to go back to where we belonged.
“Come on, Sawyer. That’s exactly what we need to figure out. If somehow we both escape from here, I’ll still have my wolf, and you’ll still have yours. Once we get out of here, we can learn to control them ourselves. We can talk to our wolves. I’ve heard people can speak to theirs and convince them to listen. We’ll just tell ours to stop acting like monsters and behave themselves.”
I folded my arms across my chest, determined.
I had seen enough to know that our worlds were different was different. Living in the werewolf land would be much better for us than staying here. I had power there.
Sawyer’s parents had power here, but he hated them. He always said they used him and that they weren’t good people.
My parents were different. Mine were good.
“So, what do you say?” I asked Sawyer.
“Yeah. Let’s go,” he answered excitedly.
He jumped up from the bed and hugged me.
“Hey! Both of you, go to sleep!”
A nurse appeared and slammed her baton hard against the bars of our cell.
We both glared at her irritably. Then, as soon as she turned away, we looked at
each other, laughed, and lay back down.
After that, we both settled down comfortably.
Sawyer fell asleep almost
immediately, probably too excited about the doctors’ party the next
night where we planned to eat as
much as we could and finally work out our escape plan.
I couldn’t sleep.
I lay there hugging Madeline’s letters, wanting desperately to go home. That day, I had learned that her parents had been making her cry even more.
Elgin and Graham were with her, but why? I should have been the one there.
So I made up my mind that night. As soon as morning came, Sawyer and I would start planning.
Enough was enough.
My wolf was completely fine. I didn’t want to put him to sleep, and I definitely didn’t want to weaken him.
They had already given me so much medicine that my wolf had been brought under control to a great extent.
I had only been warned that if I was
ever given trigger shots, my
could awaken and take

over.
I going to need those shots.
As for my wolf, the madness inside him had already been controlled.
Sawyer’s situation was very
different. His treatment was still
going on, which meant we needed to
get out quickly before they put his Wolf to sleep completely and left him unable to live in Werewolf Land.
Thinking about all of that, and about finally seeing Madeline, my best friend, again, I eventually fell asleep that night.
By morning, Sawyer was already in a bad mood.
The reason was simple. He told me I had been saying Madeline’s name in my sleep,
mumbling, “Maddie, Maddie,” over and over.
Well, I knew Sawyer was bound to be annoyed for a while.
But honestly, I had found a really good friend in him.
I felt bad for him too. He had been trapped under his parents’ control since
childhood, and they were extremely power-hungry people.
So that night, the two of us got ready to sneak into the kitchen, steal some food, and
discuss our plan.
