Chapter 768
Baxter:
I had been worried about Daniel ever since he left.
The thing about him was that he was an incredibly honest guy.
I didn’t know if I’d ever met someone like him before, but deep down, I knew I hadn’t.
Even my wolf liked him.
He was genuinely kind, the kind of person you came across once in a lifetime.
So when I finally heard the hatch opening, I jumped to my feet and hurried to the ladder to watch him climb down.
The moment he reached the bottom, he handed me a piece of paper before rushing into the bathroom.
I frowned and looked at it.
It listed iron, water, and a few other random items.
“What’s going on?” I asked, watching him bend over the sink and splash water across his face.
“Oh, this is the stuff we can use just in case the lycan, you know, gets out of control.”
A quiet sniffle escaped him as he spoke, immediately catching my attention. “Is everything okay?” I asked.
“Is Livia okay?”
I slipped the piece of paper into my pocket.
“Yeah. I mean, Sawyer took her mother from her, so there’s that,” he replied quietly.
But his eyes were red, as though he’d cried all the way here.
“Have you been crying?” I asked, leaning against the doorframe with one hand resting above my head.
“No,” he answered, his voice almost hysterical.
“By the way, I really admire how strong you are.”
The compliment seemed to slip out before he even thought about it.
I folded my arms across my chest and stepped aside as he walked out of the
bathroom, immediately looking around for something to keep himself busy.
“Tell me what happened over there,” I pressed.
He turned around and smiled at me.
“Even when you insist, your voice sounds like thunder, you know.”
I heard the crack in his voice, and everything clicked.
“Did she reject you?” I asked.
He immediately shook his head.
“No. I never confessed my feelings to her, and I’m so glad I didn’t. I’m not her type, you know.”
His body language was so shaky that it hurt to watch.
I hated seeing him in so much pain while he still forced himself to smile.
“Dude, what is going on?” I demanded, my voice much firmer this time.
Then he started telling me how they’d had to pretend they were having sex and everything.
“That’s it?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, she said she’s going to give him the trigger.”
He was still speaking when I pointed a finger at him and shook it.
“Tell me the other thing,” I interrupted. “The thing that actually upset you.”
He stared at me for a moment before taking a deep breath.
Then he smiled to himself.
“Well I’m too timid for her.”
After saying that, he repeated everything she’d told him.
Honestly, I hadn’t expected that from someone who was a doctor.
To hurt someone’s feelings like that…
The person you call your friend.
Aren’t you supposed to reject them politely instead of destroying their confidence?
“Maybe she was nervous. Her mother was with a lycan and everything,” I tried to make excuses for her.
Then I realized I was invalidating Daniel’s feelings.
So I shut up.
“She’s a bitch,” I muttered.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“No, she’s not,” he argued sharply.
“Well, this is exactly what she needs to see. That you can stand up for yourself, and
for her too.”
I pointed at him.
“And stop crying. Tears never melt cold hearts.”
I leaned over the table until I was closer to his eye level as he stayed sitting.
“You know how you melt ice?” I asked.
“What?” he replied innocently.
“Fire.”
An even deeper frown formed on his forehead.
“Well, we’ll deal with that later. First, we need to get our hands on Sawyer and kick
him out,” I declared, straightening up.
“Then the new president will probably launch an investigation into you too,” Daniel said innocently.
He truly was an innocent man.
I turned to him and smirked.
“Why would I launch an investigation into myself?”
As soon as I said that, Daniel’s face lost all its color.
The human world needed a powerful leader.
A man capable of making difficult decisions and knowledgeable enough about the
werewolf clan to keep everyone safe.
Who could do that better than me?
“All I had to do was find the files, the
keys to the weapons, and the access codes. And yolla
I’d be the new
president,” As I said those words, I
watched Daniel’s eyes widen.
J.ne
I guessed he’d never imagined that while he was gone, I’d been researching how Sawyer’s parents, had gotten that position in the first place.
“Do you think that’ll be possible?” Daniel asked, sounding genuinely worried.
For me.
“Of course it will be. I just need to get my hands on the stamp. Then I’ll come forward, promising to keep this place safe. And trust me, they’ll want to hear it from an ex-alpha,” I declared confidently, clenching my fist.
