Chapter 369
“Hi, Ms. Dalton. I’m Helen Lawson. You might not have heard of me before, but I’m Lawson Global’s chairman’s niece. I’m considered the cousin of Lawson Global’s president, Sean Lawson, and Angeline’s… aunt,” Helen said.
Ingrid tensed at the mention of Angeline.
“Why are you calling me?”
“I was in contact with Mr. Fletcher before this, and we were talking about working together. But I’ve just received news of Fletcher Corporation’s bankruptcy, and I can’t reach Mr. Fletcher now.
“I had no choice but to call you, hoping that I could reach him through you. I just
need an answer from Mr. Fletcher regarding our continued collaboration.”
Helen sounded gentle and friendly. It would easily leave one with a good impression.
Still, Ingrid exercised caution.
“It isn’t convenient for Ned to come to the phone now. I’ll pass on your message when I see him later.”
“Alright. Please do ask him to call me when you see him. Otherwise, I’ll have no choice but to work with someone else,” Helen said.
Ingrid left the bathroom after hanging up. She saw that Ned was awake and was trying to sit up.
She hurried over to put a pillow behind him, saying, “You’re awake, Ned!”
Ned looked haggard.
He gazed at Ingrid for a while, swallowing before he said, “I agreed to remain engaged to you for another two months, Ingrid. But now that Fletcher Corporation’s gone bankrupt, I can’t help you with your career anymore.
“Why don’t we just split up now? I know Simon has feelings for you but hasn’t done anything about them because I’m your fiancé—”
“If I were to break up with you and get together with him immediately after Fletcher Corporation’s bankruptcy, what would my fans think of me?”
Ingrid said firmly, “It’s times like these that I have to stick with you, Ned.
“A good reputation is the most important thing to people in my line of work. We’ve been together for years now, and if I were to leave at this time, the public would definitely think I’ma materialistic gold digger! Besides… Angie will probably tell Simon about me lying about having saved his life.”
“That’s impossible!” Ned said.
“I know Angie. I know she won’t bring it up because she said so. You don’t have to worry about that.”
The fact that Ned was considering the matter from Angeline’s perspective touched Ingrid in a sore spot. Tears streamed down her face.
“I’ve already spoken to Angie. I asked her to visit you, but she refused, saying that you’re merely her ex.
“She also told me to take care of myself, saying that she didn’t tell Simon the truth because he didn’t ask. But what if he does ask her
about? What if someone el
asks
about it? know she’ll tell them the truth!”
Ned’s pupils constricted. He was only an ex.
He inexplicably suddenly recalled the time when he and Angeline were going through the divorce. Zachary had asked him at his birthday
celebration if he would regret be actions if he were to regain his memory.
What had he said at the time?
He’d said that Angeline was nothing more than an ex-girlfriend with a horrible personality.
Ned shut his eyes, willing himself not to cry. His Adam’s apple bobbed.
“I’m sorry to have wasted your time over the years that I lost my memory, Ingrid. Now that it’s all coming back, I know Angie is the only one who holds my heart.”
He was choked up as he continued, “She’s my everything. She’s my world! Without
her by my side, there’s no reason for me to continue living.”
Ingrid bit her lip hard, not letting go even when she tasted blood. Her tears fell incessantly.
