Chapter 1021
Chapter 1021:
A sharp frown crossed Millie’s face.
“Babette,” Millie said evenly. “There’s nothing between Egbert and me, and there never will be. I only tried calling him so he could clear things up directly p>
Millie wanted to set things straight and stay out of Egbert’s private matters. The mess in Flesta was his to explain—if he chose to talk about it at all. That was why she had tried to call him; she figured it was best if Babette heard the truth from him.
Despite her feelings toward Babette, Millie saw no reason to be enemies. With JM Investments still finding its footing, she had no intention of creating unnecessary drama.
“You’re not calling him!” Babette shouted.
Yesterday’s humiliation was still fresh in her mind—she replayed every embarrassing moment with Egbert, and her blood boiled all over again.
“So what exactly do you want, Babette?” Millie asked sharply, her patience wearing thin.
“I want you out of Egbert’s life,” Babette said coldly. “Don’t talk to him, don’t meet with him, don’t even breathe the same air as him p>
Taylor, who had watched the entire exchange from the sidelines, couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Who tried to dictate someone else’s every move like that?
How could anyone believe it was normal to control another person’s friendships?
If anything, Babette wasn’t even in a relationship with Egbert.
Why was any of this happening in the first place?
Taylor’s thoughts ran wild with disbelief as she kept glancing at Millie.

Nothing came to mind for Millie—she was genuinely at a loss.
A memory flickered. Babette had once tried to force her to taste the wine she brought back from Flesta, and she had been just as condescending then.
“I’m not about to do that,” Millie said. “Egbert and I have a professional relationship, and we’ll have more projects together in the future. Babette, it’s impossible for me to pull out of Flesta just because it might hurt your feelings p>
Business came first, after all. The Perez family practically ruled Flesta. If Millie planned to make any real progress there, she would have to work alongside them—and that meant dealing with Egbert, too.
There was no sense in sacrificing her own prospects just to appease Babette’s suspicions.
A bitter laugh escaped Babette. “So you admit it! You’re just throwing yourself at any guy with a big name p>
“Let’s try to keep things civil, Babette.” Millie didn’t see the point in arguing further.
Every attempt to reason with her was met with Babette’s stubborn resistance.
Babette hadn’t even been on the guest list yesterday, yet she had shown up anyway and spent her time stirring up gossip.
Millie had hoped to avoid her today, but Babette had gone out of her way to find her again.
Now Millie could feel the start of a headache creeping in.
“I’ve got things to do,” Millie said, wanting to end the conversation. “How about we set up a meeting later, maybe with Egbert, so we can all talk openly p>
