Now here they were again, putting their signatures on another piece of paper that would drive them further apart.
Brandon’s pen remained suspended over the paper, trembling slightly in his grip. Some part of him was terrified to let history repeat itself, afraid that once he signed this contract, there would be no going back to whatever small chance he might still have.
Across from him, Millie had already finished her part. She looked up from the signed contract and immediately noticed Brandon’s hesitation.
Her gaze took in his current condition—fresh bandages wrapped around his arms and torso, dark bruises peeking out from under the white gauze. The sight stirred something uncomfortable in her chest. He looked exactly like she had during those dark days when she’d almost lost her own life.
Just a few days ago, Brandon had told her that he had fallen down the stairs.
Since then, both Eugene and Babette had been blowing up her phone, desperately trying to tell her about all the things Brandon had supposedly done to prove his love for her. But Millie didn’t want to hear about any of that.
She’d already made up her mind about Brandon a long time ago.

Brandon’s movements stopped completely. Slowly, he lifted his head and met her gaze for the first time since they’d sat down.
His expression was a complicated mess of emotions—regret, longing, resignation, and something that might have been hope all tangled together. She sat there by the table, looking almost exactly the same as she always had. Same beautiful face, same graceful posture, same quiet strength. But now there was someone else sitting beside her, someone who had taken the place that used to belong only to Brandon himself.
Brandon found himself unable to look away, drinking in every detail of her face like a man dying of thirst.
