Chapter 1025
Chapter 1025:
The memory made Egbert bristle with anger.
Having just returned from abroad, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Myron had taken advantage of his absence to enter Millie’s life.
Babette frowned at his tone, clearly displeased.
“But even though she’s with someone else, you still linger around her. Why?” Babette pressed. “Do you still have feelings for her p>
Egbert glanced at Babette.
After a brief silence, he admitted, “I don’t want to give up, but since she chose Myron, I can only accept it and let go p>
He believed Millie would likely never forgive him for what had happened in the past. That thought weighed heavily on him as he lifted his glass and took another slow sip of wine.
The living room was softly lit. As he lowered his gaze, the light brushed over his lashes and cast faint shadows across his cheekbones.
The trace of sorrow in his eyes made him appear lost in deep reflection.
Seeing Egbert like this, Babette felt a pang of sympathy for him—along with an even stronger resentment toward Millie.
In her mind, if not for Millie’s teasing, Egbert would never have been left in such pain.
“Babette, don’t make her your enemy,” Egbert said after another sip of wine. “There’s nothing between us. From the very beginning, it was only my own foolish hopes p>
“No! She was the one who confused you and gave you false hope. None of this is your fault!” Babette shot back without hesitation.
Egbert slowly lifted his eyes to her, his gaze carrying an unsettling weight.

“You don’t need to defend me,” he said calmly. “You came today, and I thought it was best we make things clear. You’re an incredible lady, but the truth is, we’re not meant to be together p>
The unease Babette had felt earlier now flared into panic.
“Why aren’t we right for each other?” Babette asked urgently. “Back in Flesta, everything between us was fine. You always looked after me. Don’t forget, you were the one who saved me at the start. And afterward, when I was handling Watson Group’s business in Flesta, you never once gave me a hard time. You helped me more than anyone else. Every time I ran into trouble, you were the one who stood by me p>
As Babette spoke, memories of those earlier days flooded her mind. “We used to be so close, but ever since you came to Crobert and Millie came between us, everything took an abrupt turn p>
The more she thought about it, the more resentment surged inside her. “Did Millie put something in your head?” she demanded, her tone sharp and unpleasant.
Egbert sighed deeply.
He held her gaze for a moment before carefully setting his glass down.
“Babette, you’re mistaken,” he said calmly. “I knew Millie long before I ever crossed paths with you. Like I mentioned before, the main reason I helped Watson Group’s business was because of her p>
Babette let out a bitter laugh.
