Millie watched as her friends left, a gentle smile in her eyes.
But… she noticed a wheelchair waiting at the doorway, with Brandon seated quietly.
He had been observing from a distance, choosing not to come closer.
Now that the group had gone off to eat, Millie finally caught sight of him.
Myron remained at her side, helping tidy up and handing her a towel to wipe her hands.
He followed her gaze and saw Brandon waiting patiently near the door.
After a brief pause, Myron turned to Millie and said, “He asked if he could speak with you in private.”
Millie grew quiet, her eyes drifting to Myron.
A deep breath left Myron as he gently recounted everything that happened after she lost consciousness in the fire.
Brandon remained stationed by the doorway, waiting in silence. Every minute stretched on endlessly.
Millie did not say a word until Myron finished his account. After some time, her attention shifted back to Brandon’s injured legs.
She gave a small, silent nod.
Seeing this, Brandon finally let out a breath of relief.
Myron moved closer, lifting Millie carefully and arranging her against the pillows until she was comfortable. He then offered a reassuring look. “I’ll be just outside if you need anything.”
Millie gave a slight nod in response.
Myron gave her hand a gentle squeeze before heading out. When he reached the doorway, he paused and glanced at Brandon.
Brandon met Millie’s gaze, but his words were for Myron. “Don’t worry, I’d never hurt her.”
Myron dropped his eyes, caught in his own thoughts, and stepped out, shutting the door with a soft click.
The sound of the closing door echoed faintly in the room.
Brandon rolled his wheelchair to Millie’s bedside.
Beneath the overhead light, their eyes met and held.
“Millie.” Brandon finally broke the silence.
Millie kept her gaze on Brandon, choosing to remain silent. Once, they had been so close to each other, but now their paths had diverged.
Quiet filled the room, broken only by the silver slant of moonlight across two people who had once been everything to each other.
Eventually, Millie lowered her gaze to Brandon’s legs.
