Chapter 1024
Chapter 1024:
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Babette watched with simmering irritation as Millie’s car disappeared from sight. She remembered Millie’s plan to reach out to Egbert.
“No, I have to reach Egbert before Millie does. Who knows what she’ll tell him about me p>
With that thought burning in her mind, Babette got into her car. She dialed Egbert’s number while driving toward his hotel.
Babette arrived shortly after and took the elevator up.
The elevator chimed as the doors opened on Egbert’s floor.
“Knock, knock p>
Moments later, Egbert opened the door.
He had a resigned look in his eyes when he saw Babette.
“Mr. Perez, can I come in?” Babette asked softly.
Egbert nodded.
It was a suite, and he stepped aside, leading her into the living room.
“Would you like something to drink?” Egbert asked as he opened the wine cooler. “Care for some wine p>
“Yes, please.” Babette nodded with a small smile.
Egbert chose a bottle of mild red wine, poured two glasses with deliberate care, and placed a quick call to room service for a few light snacks. The red wine swirled softly in the glasses.

He wasn’t worried about upsetting Babette or angering the Watson Group, but he couldn’t bear the thought of causing trouble for Millie.
Still, as he thought about yesterday’s banquet, he realized it was time to be completely honest.
“Babette, was there something in particular you wanted to discuss today?” Egbert asked calmly.
His lack of enthusiasm made Babette’s heart ache, but she quickly reminded herself of why she had come.
“I want to know,” she said carefully, “what exactly is your relationship with Millie p>
Egbert felt a small sense of relief at her directness. It gave him the chance to be equally clear.
“I pursued her once, but I didn’t manage to win her heart,” he admitted with a faint shrug. “That’s obvious p>
As Egbert thought more about it, bitterness swelled in his chest. “It’s all because of that sly strategist, Myron. I only learned later that on the very day Millie finalized her divorce, he was already making his move on her p>
