Chapter 1513
Though everything between them had changed beyond recognition, this was something he still owed her. Years of affection. Countless moments balanced on the edge between life and death. And the loss of two children. He understood all of it.
“And it will also serve the interests of the Watson Group,” Brandon added evenly. “This is what we’ve been moving toward all along.”
Millie looked at him, her eyes steady.
“Thank you,” she said at last, her voice barely above a whisper.
Brandon held her gaze, saying nothing. If he were given a choice, he would never hear those words from her again. He wished they could return to what they once were. But reality stood beside her, unmistakable, in the form of Myron. Just as Darden had said, she had no intention of leaving him.
And he—
“How about lunch?” Brandon said suddenly, turning to Myron. “All of us. Together.”
Myron didn’t answer right away; instead, he turned his eyes toward Millie, who was sitting comfortably in her wheelchair.
Brandon followed suit, glancing over at her too. In the end, the decision was hers to make.
“Okay,” Millie said at last, breaking the silence.
After hashing out a few more details, Myron wheeled Millie out of the room. Brandon hung back, quietly watching them slip away from sight. A storm of feelings and thoughts churned inside his head. He could hardly hold back the impulse to shove Myron out of the way and take over the handles himself. But deep down, he knew that wasn’t what she wanted at all. What happened a year ago had drilled that lesson into him — pushing too hard only broke her beyond repair. Seeing her hooked up to machines in that hospital bed, hanging between life and death, had cleared the fog for him like nothing else.
Brandon finally pulled his gaze away as their figures vanished around the bend in the hallway. Maybe this unusual connection between the three of them would just keep rolling on forever. Brandon dropped his eyes to the floor. Being near her, even from a distance, was all he could ask for.
While they waited for the elevator in the hallway, Millie gazed out the window. The sky stretched out in a brilliant, endless blue. Just then, Myron reached over and took her hand. Millie looked up and caught the gentle warmth shining in his eyes. She gave him a soft smile and squeezed his hand right back.
The trio had lunch at a spot Brandon had picked out, without bothering to keep things under wraps. When the three of them showed up at the entrance with their assistants in tow, heads turned and jaws dropped all around.
“What’s the deal here?”
“Am I hallucinating or something?”
“Are those three seriously having lunch together?”
This messy love triangle always had everyone in Crobert buzzing, especially since all three were big names around town. Onlookers were dying to get the juicy details, but their meal happened behind the closed doors of a private room, and except for the quick comings and goings of the waiters with the food, nobody else got a peek.
