Chapter 1467
Moonlight danced across the surface of the water. Millie rested quietly against his shoulder, untouched by the world, lost in her silent dreams.
A sudden wave of sorrow washed over Myron as he sat there, the memories pressing down with unbearable weight. He pulled her into a close embrace, silent tears slipping down his face as he held her close.
Meanwhile, Brandon sat in the backseat of his car.
Earlier that day, with Myron away on errands, Brandon had slipped quietly into Millie’s hospital room. After finishing up a full day of work, he returned, planning to sit by her side again—only to find the room empty.
He tracked down a nurse at the desk.
“Her husband took her out for a while. He said they’d be back later,” the nurse explained kindly.
Brandon’s concern deepened. “Did something happen? Is she alright?”
“She’s stable,” the nurse assured him. “Her body’s recovered, but she hasn’t woken up. Her husband thought it might help to get her out of bed, let her ‘see’ something other than these four walls.”
With that, Brandon gave a weary nod and stepped back outside, letting the evening settle over him.
He lingered beneath the dark sky, realization dawning—Myron must have taken Millie out to mark their wedding anniversary, the first since that tragic day.
Those memories felt distant and strange now.
Upon glancing down at his legs, a sudden pain shot through him—a sharp, familiar reminder of everything that had changed.
“Where to next, Mr. Watson?” Eugene asked from the driver’s seat.
Eugene had just come back from a stretch of paid leave—an arrangement Brandon insisted on after his own resignation. Now, Eugene was back in his old position, this time with better pay and a healthy performance bonus.
“My apartment,” Brandon replied quietly.
“Right away, sir,” Eugene answered, steering the car through the evening traffic.
Once they arrived, Eugene carefully helped Brandon into his wheelchair and guided him up to the apartment floor, their footsteps echoing softly in the hallway.
“Go home and get some rest,” Brandon said quietly.
“Okay,” Eugene answered. After thinking for a moment, he added, “Mr. Watson, you should lie down too.”
Brandon gave a small nod as the elevator doors slid shut and carried Eugene to the lower floors.
Brandon remained still, letting old memories rise within him, reminded of countless moments spent here with Millie. He remembered the final time he dragged her into this place, and the memory tightened his chest.
He lowered his eyes and guided his wheelchair forward, drifting through the hallway in silence, following the path his mind remembered.
When he reached his home, the darkness wrapped around him completely. The place no longer felt warm or inviting. No one waited for him inside.
With a sharp click, he switched on the lights. He turned on every lamp, filling the room with brightness, yet the emptiness stayed.
