Chapter 1487
His words lingered in the quiet of the hospital room.
“When we parted ways, you didn’t take much. It’s not a favor or repayment. It’s because, in my heart, she’s always been like a daughter to me. I hope she will accept it, if only for the sake of what happened to my legs.”
Millie’s hand tightened on the blanket, but she still gave no reply.
“You need to rest now,” Brandon said, refusing to let her protest. “I’ll leave for now, but I’ll come check on you again soon.”
With that, he turned his wheelchair, pushed the window partway closed, and quietly made his way out.
As he pulled the door open, Myron stood right in front of him.
Brandon gave Myron a brief nod, then quietly wheeled himself away.
Once Brandon had left, Myron stepped inside and softly closed the door behind him.
He walked to Millie’s bedside and took her hand gently in his. After thinking for a moment, he spoke quietly. “While you were still recovering, Brandon gave the tanzanite jewelry set to Ari. I decided to let her keep it.”
Millie turned to face Myron.
He let out a long, quiet sigh and wrapped her carefully in his arms.
Myron continued speaking, his tone steady. “Brandon came to me and asked if he could be involved more in Ari’s life. I still haven’t decided how to respond.”
“Millie…” As he softly ran his fingers through her hair, Myron spoke with a quiet voice. “There are times I question whether the mess we’ve made of our lives will ever come undone.”
Pulling her closer, he whispered, “But right now, you’re my wife. That’s what matters.”
No reply came from Millie. When Myron glanced down, he realized she had drifted off, fast asleep against his shoulder.
A tender smile curved his lips.
“Dealing with so many visitors right after waking up must be exhausting,” Myron murmured. “Just rest for now. We have so much time ahead of us.”
He lightly tapped the tip of her nose, then gave her cheek a playful poke. Her skin gave a soft bounce under his touch, yet she continued to sleep peacefully, undisturbed by it all.
The sight made Myron chuckle quietly.
“You’re finally sleeping better,” he said under his breath.
For so long, nightmares had broken her nights, and anxious thoughts had stolen her peace during the day. Now, things felt entirely different.
That realization left Myron with a sting.
Her sleep only improved because her body clearly couldn’t take much more, not like before, when even falling asleep was a struggle.
He eased her down carefully, tucking her in, then slipped out of the room to make a phone call.
Brandon had already made his way out of the hospital and was now seated comfortably inside his car.
