Philip smiled again. “But that’s not a big issue. You have a solid foundation. Once you find the right direction and truly immerse yourself in it, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to grow.”
Then he asked, “Which area are you most interested in researching right now?”
“Al agents.”
“A lot of people are piling into that field these days. Tell me what you think,” Philip said with a smile.
Wynn nodded. “Al agents have become the core application layer of Al this year…”
They talked for a while before Thomas came over to find him, bringing their conversation to an end.
Philip returned to the center of the banquet.
At that moment, Celeste and Matthias were deep in discussion with several of Philip’s longtime colleagues. Coincidentally, they were also talking about Al agents.
Celeste said, “The upper limit of what Al agents can accomplish is increasing rapidly, but the reliability curve hasn’t kept pace. Without a world model, an Al agent…”
Philip walked over, intending to listen for a bit longer. However, the moment everyone noticed him approaching, they instinctively stepped aside, making room for him in the middle of the group.
One of his friends laughed. “So, you’ve finally found time to chat with us?”
Another chimed in, “I think he’s not really here to catch up with us.”
As he spoke, he glanced toward Celeste and Matthias.
Philip didn’t mind the teasing at all. Then he laughed, “What is there left to chat about with you guys?”
Their respective research fields barely overlapped, and they’d known one another for years. So, they were already thoroughly familiar with each other’s strengths, research directions and ways of thinking.
However, Celeste and Matthias were different. They were undoubtedly the brightest rising stars in the country’s Al industry over the past two years.
Philip shook hands with them once more. “I invited you so eagerly, yet I’ve only found the time to properly chat with you now. My apologies for neglecting you.”
“You’re too kind, Professor Lancaster.”
After exchanging a few pleasantries, they naturally returned to the topic Celeste and the others had been discussing.
Celeste continued, “The fundamental limitation of Al agents lies in their capabilities. To break through that ceiling, the relationship between the memory layer and emergent personality…”
Once they had finished discussing the topic, Philip shifted the conversation to Celeste’s published papers. There was so much about her research that fascinated him.
In fact, based on her papers alone, he could already make a fairly accurate guess about the direction Celeste and Matthias intended to pursue next.
Since the two of them were already reasonably confident in their plans, they didn’t deliberately keep anything secret. As long as it wasn’t confidential, they spoke openly.
Philip couldn’t help applauding softly
after hearing them out. “It seems I
really need to spend more time learning from the younger generation. Young people are far bolder than we are both in what they dare to imagine and what they dare to pursue.”

Philip clearly wanted to continue their discussion, but there were still many other guests waiting for his attention. After chatting a little
longer he exchanged contact
information with both Celeste and
Matthias on the spot.
“I wonder if either of you is free over the next couple of days. If it’s convenient, shall
we arrange a time to continue this discussion?”
“We’d be happy to.”
After another brief exchange of pleasantries, Philip excused himself and walked away.
Once they were some distance away, Thomas quietly remarked, “Professor, I have a feeling you really want Celeste from YodaVision to be your student.”
