“Do you seriously think I actually want to go on trips with Jonathan? Can you stop coming after me every single time something happens and acting like it’s all my fault?”
“Humph.” Irene sneered. Seeing Teresa get riled up, she said meaningfully, “Teresa, I see right through your little schemes. Using every chance with the kid as an excuse to stick around Jonathan. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to:
“You know Jonathan’s a softie when it comes to Mike, so you keep using–that to your advantage. You’re just hoping being Mike’s mom will get you back in as Mrs. Lynn. Well, keep dreaming.”
“Who even wants to marry into your family again?” Teresa shot back. She took a deep breath, reminding herself she had promised Jonathan not to get worked up for the baby’s sake. But she wasn’t going to put up with Irene’s constant accusations anymore.
Teresa snapped, “Why don’t you go ask your son first? Why is it always me who’s pestering him? Why don’t you keep an eye on your son instead of coming after me every single time? Maybe you’re not tired, but I am.
“I’m exhausted. Is it because you’re afraid of your own son, so you come after me instead, just because you think I’m an easy target?”
Irene’s lips twitched with sarcasm. “Am I wrong? If it wasn’t for that kid, Jonathan would’ve dropped you a long time ago. Don’t tell me you haven’t been eyeing the position of his wife all along.
“That’s the only reason you kept the baby after the divorce, right? You’re just playing the long game, stringing him along and counting on him being too soft–hearted.”
“Fine. I’m scheming, I’m playing the long game–whatever you want to call it, okay?” Teresa finally snapped, unable to hold it in any longer. “But what can I say? Your son just keeps falling for it. What are you going to do about that?”
“You!” Irene was fuming, and her real feelings burst out. “Just leave Mike with Jonathan and get lost! If you don’t, I swear I’ll make things ugly
for you.”
“Why should I leave my own child behind? I tried so hard to give birth to him and raise him. What gives you the right to tell me to leave?”
Teresa shot back.
“Because you can’t raise him right!“Every time he’s with you, you just mess him up even more!” Irene snapped.
“Oh really? And how exactly am I messing him up? Go on, tell me!” Teresa demanded.
“Then explain this. Why does Mike call Jonathan ‘Mr. Lime‘? Isn’t that something you taught him? You vicious bitch! Are you trying to keep Mike from calling his own dad ‘Dad‘?” Irene accused.
Teresa said, “Mike can call Jonathan whatever he wants. Even if I did teach him to call him that, so what? He’s my son. How I raise him is my business. Of all people, you’re the last one who gets to judge my parenting!”
“Fine, Teresa. Keep being so stubborn. You’ll pay the price for this!” Irene snapped.
“Bring it on, Irene. I’ve put up with you long enough! You’re just clinging to your son’s money and trying to use him against me, right? Go ahead, see if I care,” Teresa said coldly.
With that, Teresa sped off in her car. This time, Teresa didn’t care if Irene was still leaning against her window. She fired up the engine and shot off without a second thought, making Irene almost lose her balance.
In her rearview mirror, Teresa caught Irene mouthing something angrily. She thought, ‘She’s probably cursing me out again. Same old story, every single time.‘
