“ Our child ? ” Jonathan suddenly understood what she meant . His gaze darkened with complex emotions . “ Hey , it’s okay . I was never mad that you were . on contraceptive pills before . We’ll have our child … in due time . ”
“ No , that’s not it . I … ” Tefesa started to say , but her phone rang , interrupting her struggle to get the words out . She frowned at the name on the screen and immediately hit ignore .
“ That was Jennifer , right ? ” Jonathan asked . “ Why didn’t you pick up ? ”
“ It’s not important , ” Teresa said . “ I just don’t want to talk to her right now . ”
She looked back at him , clenching her fists in her lap . “ The truth is , I … ”
Her phone rang . It was Jennifer . And again , Teresa declined the call .
“ You should probably get that , ” Jonathan said gently . “ What if it’s something important ? ”
Teresa shook her head . “ I know exactly why she’s calling . She must have seen the fireworks . She doesn’t want me to get back with you and repeat the same mistakes . ”
The words had barely left her mouth when another phone started ringing . This time , it was Jonathan’s .
He answered , his brow furrowing tighter and tighter as
e listened . “ Got it , ” he said sharply , then hung up .
The look on his face made her stomach clench . “ Jonathan , what is it ? ”
“ My grandpa had a stroke . He’s at the hospital , ” Jonathan said .
“ Oh my god ,” Teresa breathed . “ How ? ”
“ Hey , it’s okay . They got to him fast . The doctors say he’s stable for now , ” Jonathan said , giving her hand a gentle squeeze .
‘ A stroke ? ‘ Teresa thought to herself . ‘ But Hayden’s always been so healthy . And why now , right when I was about to tell Jonathan everything ?
Jonathan’s phone buzzed again . It was Irene this time , telling him to , get to the hospital ASAP .
Teresa snapped out of her thoughts and said gently , “ You should go to the hospital . I’ll just grab a cab home . ”
“ I’m driving you home ,” Jonathan insisted . “ It’ll be just a short detour . ”
Teresa didn’t fight him on it . Beautiful moments were just like fireworks – dazzling and magical for a heartbeat , then gone . And then they went back to
real life .
The rest of the drive was silent . As they pulled up to her place in Rosary Estates , Teresa unbuckled her seatbelt . “ Thank you for the ride . Now go , get to the hospital . ”
