Sanford shook his head , his expression turning grave . He said , “ Mike is just a three – year – old child . Don’t drag him into this . While he’s still young , and won’t remember , there’s still time to set things right . ”
Jennifer’s expression softened slightly . She thought , ‘ Evelyn also told me something similar – if only I could let go of the past , there might still be time to make things right . But is it not too late ? ‘
But finally , she insisted , “ No. I’m up for a promotion to department head at the end of the year , and I can’t afford any slip – ups right now . Once I get the promotion , we can revisit this . ”
Sanford was so anxious he nearly stomped his foot . He said , “ Then it’ll be too late . Jennifer , please , just listen to me . After all these years of friendship , do you think I’d steer you wrong ? ”
Jennifer said , “ Thanks for your concern , Sanford , but I know exactly what I’m doing . Get some rest , okay ? I’m leaving now . ” With that , she put down the receiver and stood up , turning to leave .
Sanford called out , “ Jennifer , you still have time . While I’m being detained , hurry and find Jonathan . Tell him I made you do it , and tell him about Mike . I don’t want to see another innocent child end up like me . Jennifer . ”
Sanford kept calling after Jennifer through the prison visitation glass , but his voice grew fainter and fainter , muffled by the thick partition until it faded
into silence .
Jennifer’s silhouette disappeared into the darkness , never to be seen again .
As she looked back on her path , everything seemed fated . She’d had chances to turn back , yet step by step , she herself had cut off all escape routes .
After Sanford was detained for 48 hours , Liora , still hospitalized , finally tracked down Irene .
Irene had no intention of seeing Liora , convinced there was nothing left to say between them . She sneered , “ You’re nothing but a homewrecker , Liora . You’ll be a laughingstock for life . ”
Liora didn’t get angry ; instead , she let out a cold laugh . She retorted , “ Fine , I’ll be the laughingstock . But what about you , Irene ? Surely you haven’t forgotten what triggered Yorick’s liver cancer ? ”
Irene froze , her face draining of color .
Liora abruptly shed her sickly fragility and threatened , “ That incident , only three people in this world knew : you , me , and Yorick . Now that Yorick is gone , it’s just us two . Just how many years would you serve for that poisoning case , Irene ?
“ If your son dares to put mine behind bars , I’ll make sure you end up in prison instead . ”
Irene’s face , already drained of color , grew rigid . She shot Liora a venomous glare and said through gritted teeth , “ After all these years , do you think you can still win a lawsuit against me ? ”
Liora shot back , “ Even if I can’t win in court , I can still ruin your name . Poisoning your husband and causing him such severe liver damage , who do you think the world will truly laugh at in the end ? It’s not so clear , is it ? ”
Irene lost control and clamped her hands around Liora’s throat . She bellowed , “ It was Yorick who took the poison meant for you back then . Why wasn’t it you who drank it ? Why ? ”
Liora’s gentle expression twisted into a taunting smirk . She said , “ Go ahead , kill me today , and you’ll be the one rotting in prison . ”
Irene suddenly let go . She grabbed a handkerchief and wiped her fingers with disgust . She sneered , “ Kill you ? I wouldn’t dirty my hands . ”
Liora coughed a few times , gasping for air from the earlier suffocation . Her eyes blazing , she rasped at Irene , “ My son’s already been detained for 48

hours . Tell your son to let Sanford go , or there will be total war between us .
“ Don’t blame me for not respecting Yorick’s memory anymore . ”
