Hearing Donald’s words , Jennifer thought , ‘ Then Donald must hold Jonathan in high regard . He’s someone Donald deeply respects .
If Donald ever finds out that I swapped the DNA test results , keeping Jonathan from knowing about his blood relative all this time , what would Donald think of me ? He’d probably see me as cruel , selfish , and lacking morals . How could he not ?

Seeing that his complexion had regained some color after sobering up , Jennifer lightly wiped the corner of her mouth and said , “ I need to go . ”
Donald asked , “ Where are you going ? ” He grabbed her arm tightly , as if afraid that letting go would mean she’d leave Nareigh for good .
Jennifer brushed off his grip . She said , “ Tomorrow is Memorial Day . I need to prepare offerings to visit my grandparents ‘ graves . ”
Donald let out a sigh of relief . He said , “ Then I’ll go with you . I don’t want you to feel uneasy or lonely out there ”
Jennifer was touched by his thoughtfulness , but she kept her face cold . She replied , “ No need . I’m fine on my own . ”
Donald insisted , “ I’ll still go with you . I’m worried about you . ”
Jennifer thought , ‘ Is this what it feels like to be someone’s unwavering choice ? For a moment , she found herself unable to say no again .
On Memorial Day , Teresa still didn’t show up . Jonathan had been constantly thinking of her . He hardly slept at all , busy with the family’s ancestral worship .
In these two days , even if he wanted to leave , he couldn’t . As the heir of the Lynn family , he had responsibilities to fulfill . While a few relatives chatted and prepared to head to the cemetery at nine , Jonathan sat on a single – seater sofa , typing a message on his phone .
Irene happened to walk behind him and caught sight of what he was doing . She snatched the phone from Jonathan’s hand and frowned at the unsent message displayed on the screen .
She said , “ You still haven’t told me what that red light was about . Who were you rushing to see ? And who are you texting ? ” The unfinished text read : [ How are you adjusting to Fernlandia ? ]
Jonathan’s expression darkened with frustration as he stood up . He said , “ I’ll go get the offerings ready . What time are we leaving ? I’ll go let everyone know . ”
Irene said , “ Don’t walk away ! I’m talking to you . Are you messaging Teresa ? She told me she’s in Fernlandia . It’s her , isn’t it ? ” Jonathan’s gaze sharpened as he fixed his eyes on Irene . He said , “ She told you that ? So , while I wasn’t around , you went to see her again , didn’t you ? ”
Realizing she had let something slip in her haste , Irene stammered , “ I didn’t go looking for her . She reached out to me . She said she’s leaving for good and won’t reach out again .”
Jonathan’s voice grew urgent . He asked , “ What else did she say ? ”
Irene said , “ Look at you ! Every time her name comes up , you lose your composure . You two are divorced , Jonathan . Wake up ! With everything you have , why are you still stuck on her ? ”
Jonathan replied firmly , “ Give me back my phone . I just want to ask her a few things . ”
Irene said , “ What more is there to ask ? She’s the one who decided to leave . ”
Rubbing his temples , Jonathan said , “ She’s only ever had a home in Nareigh . What , am I supposed to just let her end up homeless ? ”

Irene pounded on Jonathan’s arm . She said , “ Even if she’s out there struggling , it’s not your problem any -husband . You’re just like your father , easily swayed by emotions . That’s your one flaw . ” Irene worried endlessly . She thought , ‘ If Jonathan stays soft , he’ll never let go of Teresa ; if he hardens , he’ll turn cold and neglect his family . ‘ Either way , it felt like a lose- ‘

Jennifer glanced at Donald and was about to tell him to calm down . Suddenly , an elderly man shuffled out from around the corner , his frail figure catching Jennifer off guard , Jennifer’s heart raced as panic set in .
She slammed her foot down , but hit the accelerator instead of the brake . Disaster loomed just ahead .
“ Jennifer ! ” Donald shouted , grabbing her hand and yanking the steering wheel hard to the side .
The next moment , a loud crash echoed through the air .
