“You both promised you’d treat me well and make it up to me when I got home. Is this your idea of making it up to me? All I want is the company and you won’t even give me that.”
“Yalena, that’s not what I meant,” Katrina said, reaching out to gently take Yalena’s hand. But Yalena pulled her hand away, impatience written all over her face. Katrina could only watch as Yalena headed upstairs. She shook her head helplessly, her heart heavy with pain.
Not long after, Yalena’s father, Eason, came home. With a grim expression, Eason asked Katrina, who was sitting on the sofa, “Where’s Yalena? Has the come home?”
“She just got back and went upstairs. Did something happen?” Katrina asked, noticing that Eason didn’t look happy.
Eason didn’t say a word, his face grim as he headed upstairs. Katrina felt a sudden sense of unease and hurried after Eason.
Back in her room, Yalena opened the door. There was a loud smack as Eason slapped Yalena hard across the face.
Yalena clutched her cheek, her face twisted with rage. She glared at Eason like she could kill him right then and there. “Why the hell did you hit me?” Yalena yelled.
“Why don’t you tell me yourself? Do you really think I don’t know all the things you’ve been scheming behind my back?” Eason shouted.
Seeing Eason about to move toward Yalena to question her again, Katrina quickly grabbed his arm. “Stop it. Don’t hit the child. Can’t you just talk things out calmly?” Katrina pleaded.
Eason snapped, “I don’t know if we’ve spoiled her too much, or if something’s gotten into her lately. She’s always stirring up trouble!”
Yalena was indignant. “How am I stirring up trouble?”
Eason continued angrily, “You went out of your way to mess with Jonathan’s ex–wife before, and now you’re still at it. Don’t tell me you don’t know she’s pregnant.”
Yalena bit down hard on her lip, her eyes burning with fury. ‘Who ratted me out?‘ she thought, rage flaring in her gaze.
“I didn’t do anything. This is slander,” Yalena shot back.
“Oh yeah? Is this slander too?” Eason retorted and suddenly threw a stack of freshly developed photos right in front of Yalena.
In the pictures, the woman’s hair was all messy. She clung to different men, laughing and swaying. Sometimes she was smoking and drinking with a blond guy, and there were shots of her making out with multiple people in public, not caring who was watching.
There were even some photos that were downright indecent. When Katrina saw those photos, she covered her mouth in shock. ‘How did my sweet, well- behaved daughter turn into someone I barely recognize?‘ she thought, her heart pounding with disbelief.
“Yalena, is that really you in these pictures?” Katrina asked, her voice shaking.
