As the doctor spoke , she glanced at Teresa , who was dressed stylishly and looked every bit the part of someone well – off . If money weren’t an issue . raising a child shouldn’t be a problem . The doctor assumed this was Jennifer’s second child .
Teresa looked at Jennifer and said , “ Even the doctor thinks you should talk to your husband . It’s not like he’s dead . ”
“ That’s enough ,” Jennifer said firmly . “ This is my decision . No one is going to change my mind . ”
Seeing how determined Jennifer was , the doctor sighed . “ You’ll have to wait in line for the painless procedure . Just fill out the form first . ”
“ Okay . ” Jennifer was a doctor herself and knew the process inside out . She just never thought she’d be here for an abortion .
Then Jennifer’s phone suddenly rang . She glanced at the caller ID , her eyes flickering , and she motioned for Teresa to stay quiet before picking up . “ Hello ? ” she answered .
Donald’s voice came through , full of concern . “ Why does your voice sound a little hoarse ? I got off work early today . How about I come to pick you up in Chesburg ? ”
“ No need . Teresa wants to spend the night with me . Just the two of us . Some sister time to talk and catch up , ” Jennifer said quickly .
Hearing that , Donald didn’t push . “ Alright , I’ll let you two have your heart – to – heart . I’ll go buy some groceries and beef for dinner . Call me if you need anything , okay ? As your fiancé , I’m always here for you. ”
Jennifer felt her nose sting , but she just said , “ Okay . ” Then she hung up .
Teresa let out a cold laugh . “ You really know how to use me as your excuse . ”
Jennifer sighed . “ I really do feel bad for Donald . In so many ways, I don’t want to lose him . Please help me keep my pregnancy and abortion a secret . I just don’t want him to get hurt .”
“ Is it that you don’t want him to be hurt , or that you don’t want him to hate you ? ” Teresa asked .
Hearing that , Jennifer fell silent .
“ He’s busy planning your wedding , and you’re getting rid of his baby , without even telling him . He’s going to hate you for this , ” Teresa warned .
Jennifer said word by word , “ Right now , this baby is just holding back my career . ”
She added , “ I’ve already paid . There’s no turning back . Let’s go upstairs .”
The elevator doors slid open . The operating room felt like a gateway to the underworld . A cold , unsettling chill hung in the air .
Just as Teresa was getting creeped out , her phone suddenly rang .
Jennifer snapped , “ Whose call is that ? If it’s not important , don’t answer . ”
“ It’s Cheryl , ” Teresa said , picking up . Donald had just called Jennifer , and now Cheryl was calling Teresa .
On the other end , Cheryl sounded panicked and breathless . “ Teresa , when you had Mike , did you feel like everything was about to fall out ? I feel like the baby’s coming . Am I just overthinking it ? I’m scared my water broke . ”
“ Try to stay calm . Where are you right now ? ” Teresa asked quickly .
Cheryl was still gasping . “ I’m in Lonisburg , at the same residential complex where you bought that place before ,”

“ I’m in Chesburg , not far from you . I’ll come over to you now , ” Teresa replied .
She hung up and grabbed Jennifer’s arm . “ I think Cheryl’s about to have the baby . She’s in Lonisburg . We need to go now .”
Jennifer brushed Teresa’s hand off . “ If she’s in labor , she can call an ambulance . Why is she calling you ? ”
“ She’s just a young girl , all alone in Lonisburg . She doesn’t even know if she’s really in labor , and she wanted to ask me . I could tell from her voice that something was wrong ,” Teresa explained .
She yanked her arm free from Jennifer . “ Forget it . I’ll go myself . Honestly , I’d rather check on Cheryl than sit here with you for your abortion . ”
