Jennifer stood up and snapped , “ How is this my fault ? Don’t you dare slander me here ! ”
Cheryl shot back , “ Wasn’t it you stirring up trouble in my family again ? Otherwise , why would my parents get divorced ? The last time I came home , it because you told me Dad was seeing someone else . Face it . It must be your fault . ”
“ Cheryl ! ” Cathy tugged at Cheryl’s slender wrist and urged her to stop talking . “ Jennifer wasn’t wrong about this . Your dad did have an affairs
It hit Cheryl like a ton of bricks . In Cheryl’s heart , Werner had always been a towering , majestic figure like an unshakable mountain . Now , that mountain had crumbled to dust .
With tears streaming down her face , Cheryl stared unblinkingly at Werner and demanded , “ Dad ! Is this true ? Say something . Tell me , is what Mom said really true ? ”
Werner remained silent . Finally , he struggled to say , “ I’m sorry, Cheryl . I had my reasons .”
Cheryl cried out , “ What possible reasons could you have ? I refuse to believe you’re that kind of person . ” She burst out of the door .
Donald was about to chase after Cheryl , worried she might do something reckless , but Jennifer grabbed his arm with a frown . “ She’s an adult . Let her cool off on her own . There’s no way she can’t handle this . ”
Donald let out a heavy sigh and finally sat down .
Cheryl ran to the park and collapsed onto a bench , burying her face in her hands as sobs wracked her body . She refused to believe that Werner had an
affair .
Her phone buzzed . She pulled it out and saw a message from Donald . [ Cheryl , it’s true . Dad had an affair . We should respect Mom’s decision , and you need to accept this . ]
As Cheryl read the message , tears once again streamed down her face . She broke down in unrestrained sobbing , her mournful cries drawing the attention of passersby , but she ignored them .
A Lamborghini pulled up on the road behind her , but in her distraught state , it went completely unnoticed . The sky was steadily darkening as amethyst- hued twilight glimmered in the distance .
It wasn’t until a pair of white sneakers appeared before her that Cheryl , her vision blurred with tears , finally looked up .
Benny jogged over in a T – shirt , a towel slung around his sweaty neck . meeting you here . Got something in your eye ? ”
“ It’s none of your business … ” Cheryl roughly wiped away her tears .
Still catching his breath , he flashed a smile and plopped down beside her . “ Fancy
Benny handed her a bottle of water . “ Then make sure to hydrate . I’ll leave you to it . Gotta keep going with my run . ”
“ Hey , wait a sec . ” Cheryl clutched the hem of Benny’s shirt .
Benny turned to look at her , noticing her slender , fair fingers clutching his shirt .
Cheryl pouted pitifully , her voice thick with grievance . “ I really need a shoulder to lean on right now . Can I borrow long . ”

Benny fought the urge to burst out laughing . But when he saw the look of utter misery on her face , he quickly suppressed his smile and sat down beside
her .
He gave his shoulder a gentle , inviting pat , and the very next second , Cheryl leaned in , burying her tear – streaked face against Benny’s shoulder ,

Cheryl sobbed even harder , “ My dad cheated . Mom divorced him . I’ve lost my family forever ! ”
Benny showed little surprise . After all , Cathy had already consulted a lawyer about divorce , and that lawyer just happened to be from Benny’s fim . The divorce of Cheryl’s parents was something Benny had seen coming all along .
