Lionel told them the truth.
He had seen that Hannah was being bullied and simply wanted to teach the man a lesson, so he slapped him as a warning. He never imagined the man would actually call the police. That was a development he hadn’t anticipated at all.
After hearing his explanation, the officer gave the disgraced CEO a long look, a suspicion forming that the man might not be entirely stable.
Lionel had been all over the news lately. Even as a cop in a different city, he was well aware of the family drama and the impending divorce.
“Given that you acted on your own and were not incited by your wife, you are required to apologize to him p>
James was pleased with this outcome.
“An apology is hardly enough! I’ve been seriously injured. Look at this handprint on my face, it’s severe p>
The officer continued, “You will also have to pay for his medical examination and emotional distress. And please, refrain from this kind of behavior in the future. They had already resolved the matter privately. Your actions cause unnecessary trouble for society p>
The officer then asked James if he was satisfied with this resolution, letting him know they could pursue it further if he wasn’t.
James was greedy and would have loved to milk it for more.
But he also knew that powerful people like the Rosenbergs could resort to dirty tricks if pushed too far. It was better to quit while he was ahead.
“I am very satisfied with your handling of this, officer. I just want to tell Mr.
Rosenberg that this country is governed by the rule of law,” he declared, striking a righteous pose.

The reminder hit Lionel hard, and his face darkened with anger and frustration.

At this point, Lionel had no grounds to argue. He had no choice but to accompany James to the hospital and then drive him to Tess’s company.
Afterward, he returned to Hannah’s office building, only to be stopped by a security guard who had clearly been briefed.
“Sir, please leave. Our company has instructed us not to let you on the premises. Your assault on one of our former employees has caused a serious disruption p>
“If you don’t leave now, we will call the police to have you removed. You’ve already been taken in once today; I doubt you want a repeat p>
Lionel quickly tried to explain that he was there to see Hannah.
The guard replied, “These
instructions came from Ms. Green and the CEO We’re just doing

The guard didn’t answer his question. He simply turned, clasped his hands behind
his back, and returned to the security booth.
Hearing that Hannah was behind it, Lionel was left speechless. His face fell as he got back in his car and drove away.
