“You just what?” Hannah cut him off before he could continue, her chin lifted slightly as she stared directly into his eyes.
“You just think that I should be here to clear your name, that even while we’re in the middle of a divorce, I should unconditionally come to your aid.”
Hannah’s voice was firm and resonant, each word striking Lionel’s heart like a heavy blow.
The three elders sitting nearby made no move to intervene. They knew Hannah’s previously gentle nature, how she had always let Lionel have his way. Seeing her stand up to him and speak so forcefully was a scene they had never witnessed before.
“Lionel, you think it’s wrong for me to talk about the divorce proceedings now? Well, let me ask you, was it okay when you summoned me right after Sandra’s surgery to hand me divorce papers?”
“Was it okay when you abandoned me when I was sick, all because of a few words from Sandra?”
“Was it okay when you gave me the silent treatment just because I said a few things you didn’t like about Sandra?”
“Was it okay when you, pressured by these elders, immediately suspected me and stormed into my home early in the morning to interrogate me?”
With each question, Hannah took another step forward.
And Lionel, plagued by guilt, anxiety, and fear, took a step back.
He continued retreating until the backs of his knees hit the edge of the sofa, and with nowhere left to go, he collapsed onto it, staring up at Hannah with a trembling gaze.
Hannah stopped and stood before him, looking down at the man beneath her with an air of imperious disdain.
“Lionel, I came here in person today because was afraid you’d try to weasel your way out of it, claiming you were too busy or that you never knew about the court date!
After all, the Lionel of today was exactly that shameless.
It was necessary to preempt all possibilities and leave him with no excuses.
Of course, that was secondary. The most important reason was to ensure the media reported on her visit to discuss the divorce with him.

“Lionel, I’ve said what I needed to say. You should receive the court summons when you get home. I’ll be waiting for you in court. I hope you’ll be on time.”
With that, Hannah gave Samuel and Cherry a look, signaling that it was time to leave.
The three elders sat and watched as Hannah left with her two younger brothers in tow.
Her arrogant and domineering demeanor was strikingly similar to how Lionel used to be in the beginning.
In contrast, the disheveled man sitting on the sofa, Lionel, was a painful reminder of how Hannah had been in the beginning.
“Lionel,” Mr. Michael Rosenberg said,
looking at him and letting out an undisguised laugh. “You used to be so arrogant with Hannah. What happened? Now you’re just sitting there without a peep it’s really not like you.”
The other elder nodded in agreement. “Indeed. That’s not the attitude you had when
you were arguing with us just now. Why have you suddenly become as quiet as a mouse?”
