Nash walked over and joined her in the breeze, his tone casual as he said, “I’ve gotten used to it. There’s no point in trying to change things now. It’s all the same.” All the same? What did he mean by that?
Nina thought she knew him well, but she realized there were still many secrets about him. She observed his side profile intently and inquired, “Did they treat you like this before? Isolated you?” But why, though?
It was evident that these people were older than Nash. They dote on Eve so much, why couldn’t they be more understanding toward Nash? He must have been very young when he was in the military. Nash replied, “I rarely meet with them anymore, so you don’t need to worry too much.”
“You’ve never told me about your time in the military.”
Nash glanced at Nina. “I spent some time in the military, but it wasn’t official. At that time, nobody cared, and Grandpa George took me in.”
Nina was surprised. “Why? Didn’t your family take care of you?”
Nash shrugged it off. “They were busy and didn’t have the time.”
Nina pursed her lips, not entirely understanding. Even if they were busy, shouldn’t he have stayed with his family? And even if his parents didn’t care for him, wasn’t his aunt there?
“Then you… saved a lot of people, right?” Nina asked curiously, subconsciously gripping his hand.
Nash reminisced, “Back then, I was just a teenager, barely in my teens. I didn’t know much, just focused on completing the missions and saving some people.”
Nina’s speculation was correct. He had saved many people, so he did not remember them all.
“And the scars on your body are from that time?”
“Yeah.”
Thinking about it, Nina could not help but feel a bit bitter. He was just a teenager back then, still a child. He should have been in school. But he had already done so much.
Nina was lost in thought, but Nash patted her head gently. “Saving lives and helping the injured is a soldier’s duty. Don’t worry too much about what others think. As long as you have a clear conscience, that’s what matters.”
“Is it worth it?”
For him, it was about doing good deeds, whether they were acknowledged or not.
“Whether it’s worth it or not depends on one’s personal values,” Nash replied. “Those days were quite fulfilling.”
For him, that was all there was to it.
After dinner and a brief rest, they prepared to head home. While Grandpa George did not drink, the others had indulged a bit, becoming a bit tipsy as they reminisced about the past. But none of it concerned Nash.
“From now on, bring Nina with you more often,” Grandpa George said as they were about to leave, then added, “Oh, by the way, it’s time you two had a kid. Hurry up and have one while I’m still mobile enough to run around with your little one.” With that topic, Grandpa George perked up.
Hearing this, Nina subconsciously touched her stomach.
Grandpa George noticed the gesture and chuckled, asking, “Nina, is it true?”
Startled, Nina quickly withdrew her hand. “No, Grandpa George, Nash and I haven’t planned to have children yet.”
“In that case, you should hurry up,” Grandpa George urged.
Nash assured him, “If there’s good news, we’ll let you know.”
After exchanging pleasantries, they finally left.
Meanwhile, Eve was upstairs watching them leave, feeling somewhat frustrated. Once back in her room, she made a phone call.
“Hey, Eve, it’s your grandpa’s birthday today, isn’t it? Got a bunch of folks over, having a blast?” the person on the other end asked.
“I’m not happy at all,” Eve pouted. “Remember that Nina who bullied you? I wanted to stand up for you, but ended up getting scolded by Grandpa instead!”
