Chapter 343

She handed the bag to Eve.
Eve, however, had some concerns and asked, “Weren’t you next to me making a phone call yesterday? I turned around and you were gone. Are you sure it was me who disappeared?”
Stella did not tell the truth. She did see Eve being bullied, but she did not lend a hand. Being a girl herself and not having anyone with her, intervening would have brought trouble upon herself. She could only watch coldly, waiting for an opportunity to slip away unnoticed.
She could not let Eve know that she was aware of the danger she was in but acted as if nothing had happened.
She smiled and said, “Yes, I was in an important business call. It lasted for over half an hour, and after I hung up, I didn’t see you anymore. I thought you couldn’t wait and went back first, but your bag was left with me, so I brought it over.”
“What happened, Eve?” Stella asked as if she knew nothing.
In the past, Eve would have believed Stella’s words without question. Stella was her senior schoolmate. When she studied abroad alone and did not know anyone, meeting Stella from the same city naturally made her feel close to her.
Moreover, Stella had taken care of her a lot back then, making her feel warmth, so she considered her a friend.
But this time, when she was in danger, Stella disappeared directly, and Nina had said those words, which made her suspicious.
“Why are you so upset?” Stella asked when Eve did not speak, reaching out to hold her hand affectionately. “Are you angry? I didn’t accompany you for dinner yesterday, my bad. How about we go for a meal later and make up for yesterday’s miss? Would that make it up to you?”
Eve did not hold back either. “Yesterday, I went to Nina’s house for dinner. I’m not hungry now,” she said.
Stella’s expression stiffened, and she asked, “How come you went with her? Did she say bad things about me to you?”
It was instinctive for her to think this way, and she feared that Nina might have said something about her. She continued, “I was wondering why you’ve been distant with me today. She must have said something bad about me, right? She’s good at pretending. Don’t believe her. How long have you known her compared to me? Don’t you know what kind of person I am?”
Before the danger occurred, Eve would have complained about Nina with her. But now, she had undergone a significant change in her mind.
Withdrawing her hand, Eve frowned and said, “Nina has never said anything bad about you, at least not to me. But I’ve heard quite a lot of bad things about Nina from you.”
She was righteous and wanted to defend Stella, unable to stand seeing her bullied. But she was not foolish either.
Nina had never spoken ill of anyone; everything came from Stella’s mouth.
Seeing Eve rejecting her touch, Stella suddenly looked troubled again. “Do you hate me now? Have you forgotten how I took care of you when you were abroad? You still don’t understand? I thought about you even for trivial things like food and clothing. I knew you were alone and scared abroad, so I stayed with you for a while.”
Indeed, she was right. Eve had been alone and had received a lot of help from Stella while abroad.
Eve also had a question in her mind as she looked at her. “Back then, you didn’t know about my family situation, just that I was orphaned and stranded abroad. Were you genuinely kind to me, or did your kindness give you a sense of superiority?”
