“Nash…” She had just approached and was just about to call out but Nash turned back. He was still on the phone and he walked past her without noticing. “Block the news. Don’t let anyone know about Miranda’s condition. It won’t look good…”
Brushing shoulders with Nash, she felt like she was being treated as invisible. At that moment, Nina felt quite uneasy. While she worried about Zoe, it seemed that Nash was consumed with concern for Miranda, fearing it might affect her future prospects.
She should not have thought so much about it, but everything she saw planted seeds of doubt in her mind. Seeing Nash so preoccupied with Miranda, he must have been very worried.
Nina did not want to trouble him to find out more, so she headed towards the office. The doctor would surely provide her with accurate answers.
Talking to the doctor about Miranda’s condition, she learned that Miranda was deaf in both ears, completely unable to hear.
She had already known about Miranda’s inability to sing due to throat issues and that she had some hearing impairment in one ear. But how could it affect both ears?
The doctor also informed her that Miranda’s ears were originally expected to fully recover. Nash had even brought in top doctors to ensure her full recovery.
Even if her voice could not fully return to its former state, her hearing could. However, this sudden onset of deafness in both ears was puzzling, and they could not find answers.
If Miranda continued to not recover, she might permanently lose her hearing and have to rely on hearing aids in the future. Nina was taken aback by this revelation. Miranda seemed to have quite a few health issues.
Nina added another question, “Is Miranda’s condition congenital?” Some people may not have had hearing problems before, but as they age, hidden genetic issues can surface.
The doctor shook his head. “No, it’s acquired. This condition arises from severe brain trauma or ear injuries.”
Previously, Nina had heard about some of Miranda’s physical defects but had not looked into them in detail. Since it was not congenital and there had been signs of improvement, why had it worsened to the point of complete deafness?
It did not seem so straightforward. Zoe might have indeed run into trouble today. Nina could not help but worry.
“Alright, thank you, Doctor,” Nina said, concluding her inquiries before leaving. She did not wait with them for Miranda to come out but instead returned to her own room.
She scrolled through all the videos and news she could find online about Miranda but found no mention of her hearing loss. Even today, when she entered the hospital, there was no news. It was a bit strange. Lost in thought, Nina was jolted back to reality when her hospital room door opened. She looked up to see Scott standing there, out of breath. When he saw her, he visibly relaxed.
“How did you know I was here?” Nina was a bit surprised. She did not remember telling Scott she was in the hospital.
“I heard from Leonard that you were admitted. I got worried so I rushed over to check on you. Thankfully, you’re okay. What a relief!” He repeated it several times, showing how much he had been worried.
As he spoke, Nina understood. She had professional dealings with Leonard and had informed him. He must have told Scott right away.
“Why did he tell you? I didn’t want you to worry, seeing you all sweaty.” Nina and Scott had always maintained some distance between them, as classmates and old friends do.
She appreciated his concern but did not want to trouble him too much.
