Chapter 618

Wilfred’s brown eyes met Scarlett’s gaze. Seeing the worry and fear in her eyes, he pulled his hand away from hers. “You don’t need to be involved in this.”
Scarlett’s eyes reddened, and she said hysterically, “Is it worth it? Are you insane? We’ve fought so hard to stay alive, and now you want to throw your life away for someone else. I’ve done so much for you, taken so many hits from Sawyer to protect you. Just think of it as doing this for me. I’m your partner. You can’t abandon me!”
Wilfred’s hand dropped limply by his side, his voice calm. “I never asked you to do all that for me. This is my burden to bear alone.”
“Wilfred!” Scarlett shouted, walking over and grabbing his hand again. “Do you have a death wish?”
Wilfred looked at her. “Haven’t I told you before? What’s so frightening about death?”
Scarlett let go of him and stepped back, filled with disappointment. “If you’re this crazy, I should have killed her back then!”
Wilfred’s eyes turned sharp, and he said coldly, “Haven’t you learned your lesson yet?”
Scarlett laughed bitterly. “You know you’re the only one I have left. I finally have a companion, and now you want to leave me. I’ll go kill her right now!”
She turned to leave, but Wilfred’s hand clamped around her neck.
Scarlett gasped for breath, her eyes wide as she looked at Wilfred’s murderous expression. “You wouldn’t dare!”
For Nina, he did not even care about her anymore. At that moment, Scarlett felt like laughing. She had overestimated her place in Wilfred’s heart.
Losing him meant being abandoned again. She hated that feeling and could not accept it. What was the point of living?
She would rather die at Wilfred’s hands than be alone. That loneliness was so cold, so unbearably cold.
Seeing that Scarlett was not struggling, Wilfred released his grip. She collapsed to the floor, coughing and gulping for air.
Wilfred looked down at her. “You need me because I’m your partner, your only partner. But have you ever considered that there will always come a day when we part ways? Whether it’s sooner or later, what difference does it make?”
A tear slid down Scarlett’s cheek. She had not cried when she was beaten or during the hardest times, but Wilfred’s words brought her to tears.
“I don’t want to see you die!”
The coldness in Wilfred’s eyes softened. He squatted down and wiped away her tear with his fingers. “Do you know what I need?”
Scarlett stared at him, unable to speak.
“We’re not the same,” Wilfred said with a smile. “I want to live a life without regrets.”
Scarlett could not help but hug him, crying on his shoulder. “Wilfred, you named yourself “Wilfred” which means “desiring peace and live without worries” in Old English. However, when have you ever been without worries? It’s just a beautiful fantasy you hold in your heart. You want to live carefree, but you’re always burdened. It’s impossible for you.”
“This is my fate,” Wilfred said softly.
“I don’t want to watch you burn out,” Scarlett replied.
“Once everything is over, I hope you find freedom.”
Scarlett said, “Will there really be an end to this? Will I still be alive when that day comes? Or will I die like you, except maybe you’ll have a peaceful death while I might die with no one to even bury me!”
