Chapter 545

“Alright,” Nina agreed, telling her, “Let’s sleep.”
Yvonne was exhausted and quickly fell back asleep. However, Nina had too much on her mind to rest.
Yvonne’s mention of praying made her think of the green prayer beads Wilfred always had with him, which felt oddly familiar.
In the morning, Nina was awakened by Yvonne’s urgent voice.
“Nina, wake up! It’s bad. Nash is in critical condition!”
Nina’s eyes flew open. “What?”
Her heart raced as she jumped out of bed. “When did this happen?”
“Just now. They called from the hospital!” Yvonne explained.
Seeing the missed call on her phone, Nina’s heart sank.
Was Nash really not going to make it?
Tears welled up in her eyes as she imagined a life without Nash. If he died, she would never see him again, and that thought was unbearable. She felt as though her heart had been ripped apart. Fighting back her tears, Nina hurriedly dressed, knowing she needed to be strong and get to the hospital.
On the way, Yvonne tried to comfort her, telling her not to be too sad.
How could she not be sad?
If Nash died, what would she and their unborn child do?
Nina could not bear the thought of a life without Nash. Even if they divorced, even if he did not love her, it was better than him being gone forever.
She struggled to hold back her tears, too upset to speak or listen to anything around her. Her mind was consumed with the news of Nash’s critical condition.
At the hospital, Nina rushed to the ICU, where she saw Nash’s comrades, all with grim faces. Nash was still unconscious.
Unable to hold back any longer, Nina’s body shook as she called out, “Nash…”
She walked in, seeing Nash lying there with his eyes closed and his face pale. She had never seen him so weak.
“Ma’am,” James called to her.
Nina, in a daze, felt her legs give out as she reached Nash’s side. Kneeling by his bed, she grabbed his hand, tears streaming down her face.
“How did this happen? You promised you wouldn’t die. You have to keep your word. If you die, what will I do?”
She collapsed by the bedside, sobbing uncontrollably. She had never imagined receiving such devastating news. She broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Just then, Nash’s fingers twitched.
Nina thought it was her imagination, but then they twitched again.
Thinking she was hallucinating from her grief, she felt a hand on her head.
“If I die, you’ll be a widow. I can’t let that happen,” Nash’s raspy voice said.
Nina’s sobs stopped abruptly. She looked up in shock to see Nash’s eyes open, gazing at her with a gentle smile.
She was stunned.
Wasn’t he supposed to be in critical condition?
How was he able to speak?
Could this be a trick?
Nash, reached out, wanting to hold her to feel more at ease. But Nina, both heartbroken and angry, pushed his arms away and stood up. “You lied to me?” She turned to James and the others. “You all conspired to trick me, didn’t you?”
James looked guilty. “Captain York wanted to see you, so he came up with this plan to get you here quickly…”
“Enough!” Nina’s emotions were in turmoil. She glared at Nash. “You’re despicable, tricking me at a time like this. Did you even consider how I’d feel?”
Nash, still holding her hand, weakly replied, “I’m sorry. I just missed you so much and was afraid you wouldn’t come to see me. That’s why I came up with this plan.”
