Chapter 617

Wilfred followed Nina’s gaze toward the door. Then, he walked over and opened it. The person who entered was Scarlett. Her worried eyes turned to Wilfred. “How are you?” she asked.
Noticing someone behind him, she saw Nina. Scarlett looked surprised but then pressed her lips together, remaining silent.
Seeing her, Nina felt a whirlwind of emotions. Nina had just learned about her poisoning, and now Scarlett appeared. The pity she had felt earlier vanished and was now replaced by anger and resentment.
“It’s you,” Nina said, walking over.
Scarlett looked up at her. “It’s been a while.”
Nina asked, “Was it you who poisoned me?”
Scarlett’s expression changed, and she chose to remain silent.
For her, this matter was also extremely complicated and troubling. But thinking of how it involved Wilfred, Scarlett felt a twinge of guilt.
Nina realized she had been too naive, always hoping for the best. “Why did you do it? If you wanted to kill me, why didn’t you just push me off a cliff? That would have been more thorough. Instead, you gave me hope for life, only to make me drag others down with me!” This state of being neither alive nor dead, causing others to sacrifice themselves for her, was unbearable.
“Ivy, don’t get too worked up,” Wilfred said, trying to calm her down.
Nina’s eyes darted between the two of them.
Scarlett then spoke. “I didn’t know that injection was poison. It was prepared by Sawyer. I was just carrying out my mission!”
“Carrying out your mission,” Nina repeated. “You say it so lightly. You wanted my life. How many lives have you taken? I had no quarrel with you.”
Scarlett did not know how to explain. Their positions were different.
“I had no choice,” Scarlett said. “We all had no choice.”
If they disobeyed, death was the only outcome. To survive, they had no other options.
Nina suddenly did not know whom to blame. Should she blame Scarlett, who claimed she did not know it was poison? Or should she blame the higher-ups, who were all ruthless villains?
Nina felt lost and disoriented. Seeing Scarlett, she wanted to vent her anger and blame her cruelty. But after all the talking, she realized it was meaningless.
Slowly, she turned to leave.
Wilfred, worried, grabbed her clothes. “Ivy.”
“Let go of me!” Nina shook him off and looked up at him. In that moment, her eyes were cold. “You and she are in this together. You all claim to have no choice. Does that give you the right to hurt others? People like you can never wash away the stains on your souls!” With that, Nina resolutely left.
Wilfred’s expression turned pale, stunned where he stood. Nina’s words had struck a painful chord, making him feel unworthy.
People like them…
Indeed, he and Nina were not the same. He had been immersed in darkness since childhood. How could he ever be clean?
“Wilfred,” Scarlett said. “You see? No matter how much you do, she will never appreciate it. You and she are not from the same world!”
A trace of sadness crossed Wilfred’s eyes. He was deeply lost in his thoughts.
“She despises you for who you are. Why would you die for her?” Scarlett grabbed his arm, trying to persuade him to value himself. “Don’t sacrifice yourself for her, okay?” Wilfred remained silent.
Perhaps, in the moment Nina despised him, the little light he had inside him dimmed. He lost the courage to fight.
“Do you hear me?” Scarlett moved closer, touching his face. “You can’t die for her, understand? No matter what you do, she will never appreciate it!”
