Chapter 321

Yet Nina still sensed something off. Nash’s seemingly casual remark carried a hint of indifference and a touch of resignation.
Maybe she was reading too much into it. She could not shake the habit of analyzing Nash’s emotions from his words, caring about his ups and downs. She should not worry so much.
Entering the Gibson residence, they found it already bustling with people, around a dozen or so. Some were dressed in suits, others in military uniforms, all looking quite distinguished. Grandpa George wore a simple suit, not a new one, but rather giving off a vintage vibe, just as Nash had mentioned. Grandpa George was indeed a thrifty man.
Grandpa George seemed to be enjoying himself with the others, but upon seeing Nash and Nina approach, his face lit up. “Ah, Nash is here, and Nina too,” he exclaimed, rising from his seat with the help of a cane to greet them.
Nina quickened her pace subconsciously, not wanting Grandpa George to exert himself. “Grandpa George!”
“Nina,” Grandpa George said, eyeing her, “you look lovely today. Nash finally splurged on a beautiful dress for you!”
His words were teasing, and Nina laughed as she replied, “The last couple of times we met, you were working, so I dressed more simply. But actually, Nash has bought me plenty.”
It had become her habit to defend Nash with compliments.
“That’s good to hear. A man who takes care of his wife will prosper,” Grandpa George remarked, his gaze turning towards Nash, still beaming.
“Grandpa George,” Nash’s voice was steady as he asked, “Feeling better?”
“I’m fine now, don’t worry. I’ve already outlived your grandpa by several years, that’s enough!” Grandpa George replied.
Nash furrowed his brows slightly. “You should not say things like that.”
Seeing Nash’s change in expression, Grandpa George quickly added with a cheerful tone, “Alright, alright, just a few jokes. You took it seriously. Of course, I wish for a long and healthy life!” Nina looked at Grandpa George, sometimes he still seemed like a mischievous old man.
“Nash is here,” someone remarked. “You haven’t attended Mr. George’s birthday for the past few years, why did you come today?”
Nina glanced over and noticed several people in military uniforms chatting. They looked to be in their thirties or forties.
Nash glanced at them and replied casually, “The invitation was sent, so naturally, I came.”
“So, without an invitation, we can’t even get you to come,” the man’s words were sharp.
Nina looked at the man, who appeared to be in his forties, meticulously groomed with sharp features. But there was a hint of disdain in his eyes when he looked at Nash.
“Why did you bring a female companion?” he continued. “It’s not appropriate to bring others to a family banquet.”
Grandpa George interrupted sternly, “Frank, we’re all family here. Nina is Nash’s wife, so show some respect.”
Frank Smith looked at Grandpa George, his tone softened and respectful, “Mr. George, we’re just having a casual chat, please don’t be upset.”
“But wait, Nash got married? How come we didn’t know? After all, we used to be in the same battalion. Feels a bit unfair.”
“Yeah, we had no clue.”
“Guess he didn’t think much of us, huh?”
Others chimed in agreement.
“Nash has the same personality as me, low-key. He doesn’t like to make a big deal out of things. Besides, he has already left the army, it’s his private matter. That’s enough for today, don’t gossip anymore,” Grandpa George explained.
Left the army?
Nina looked at Nash, his face was cold and silent.
Did he serve in the military before?
