Nash glanced at Nina. “It’s just a few novels. Why hide them? Am I not allowed to see them?”
“Naturally, one would read romance novels in private. Even girls feel embarrassed about it. You’re overthinking it, Mr. York,” explained Yvonne.
Luckily, Nina was always cautious. Before buying the books, she had purchased several novels and kept them in her bag instead of leaving them on the table. Nina did not want Nash to know, so she made sure to cover all the bases, not even overlooking such details.
However, Nina did not feel like engaging in further conversation with Nash. At this point, he was simply suspicious of her. Setting aside the matter of whether she was pregnant or not, just based on his firm and assertive demeanor made her want to storm off.
Grabbing her bag, she promptly walked away from him.
Nash tossed the books onto the table and called out after her, “Nina, stop!”
But Nina did not halt her steps.
Nash stepped forward and grabbed her hand, asking coldly, “Didn’t you hear me? Are you not going to listen to me now?”
Unable to break free, Nina turned to look at him. “Mr. York, I’ve finished work for the day. I have my own free time now. Why should I still listen to you?”
This response left Nash momentarily stunned. Their dynamic had always favored him. Nina had always been submissive, whether at work or at home, obedient and considerate.
Frowning deeply, his voice lowered as he said, “Wasn’t it always like this before?”
Nina gazed into his eyes. Despite her assertiveness, she noticed his vulnerability beneath his words.
Removing her hand from his grip, she sighed and said, “Yes, it was. I used to be like that, not speaking up loudly to you, not resisting, always accommodating your wishes. You probably thought everything I did was just a matter of course. After all, at the office, I’m your secretary, and at home, I’m your wife. You thought all of this was my duty. But don’t forget, I want a divorce from you. I’m resigning from the company too. So, all of this is unnecessary now!”
Nash also realized this. He seemed to have taken Nina’s tenderness, care, and meticulousness for granted, ignoring her feelings. Softening his attitude, Nash said to her, “Nina, if I change as you said, will you reconsider divorcing me?”
Nina gazed into his earnest eyes. Perhaps in the seven years she had been by his side, she had never seen him so serious before. Previously, he had never cared about her and had always assumed she would not leave.
Over the years, he had grown accustomed to her kindness, her meticulous care in every aspect of life, and he naturally did not want her to leave. He feared losing her, losing a free nanny. When she wanted to leave and ignored him, he would realize his loss and try to win her back.
But Nina had come to terms with it now. Rather than being trapped in a cage, it was better to break free. She really wanted to give him up. Tears shimmered in Nina’s eyes, but she smiled and said, “Nash, ask your heart. Sometimes, forcing something doesn’t make it sweeter.”
She now understood this truth. No matter how much effort she put in, no matter how many years she waited, he still would not love her. Whether he loved her or not did not matter anymore. What mattered was that she was tired. With that, Nina walked away.
Outside, Quincy was running after her, holding the bouquet of flowers, panting, “Mr. York, you forgot your flowers…”
