Just as he encountered Nina, Quincy stopped and said, “Madam, Mr. York invited you to dinner…”
He noticed the glistening tears in Nina’s eyes, realizing they had argued before. He added, “Madam, regardless of the conflict between you and Mr. York this time, he knows he was wrong. Look, these flowers were bought by Mr. York, they’re for you.”
He wanted to mend their relationship. He had been with Mr. York for many years, and he had never thought about buying flowers for anyone.
Mr. York was clueless about what couples should do. It’s not that he did not understand, but he felt that no woman could make him do such things. The fact that he put thought into these flowers for Nina showed he still cared for her.
Nina looked at the flowers in Quincy’s hand and smiled faintly. “Didn’t I say to call me Nina? Why are you calling me ‘Madam’ again? From now on, there’s no ‘Madam,’ just colleagues. And as for these flowers, Mr. York should give them to someone who’s actually important to him.”
“No… Madam, aren’t you the most important person to Mr. York?” Quincy tried to say something nice, but Nina insisted on leaving, not wanting to have any expectations of Mr. York. She was only waiting for a divorce from him, a clean break.
“Madam,” Quincy saw her hurry away and glanced back at Mr. York behind him, “Shouldn’t we go after her? Madam is angry.” He was even more anxious than Mr. York. He was desperate to repair their marriage.
Mr. York fell into thought, then asked, “Did you see the tears in Nina’s eyes just now?”
“Yes, Madam must be feeling very upset,” Quincy replied.
“But I’ve said those things, why would she still have tears in her eyes? And saying things like ‘forcing something doesn’t make it sweeter.’ Could it be that being with me makes her so miserable?” Mr. York wondered aloud.
“How could that be!” Quincy said anxiously, “Women need to be comforted. Just console her, Mr. York. Take these flowers and go after her, persistently if you have to!”
Nash’s cold gaze fell on Quincy. “Persistently? Isn’t that more your style?”
He had never stooped to such measures in his life. How could this be happening to him?
Quincy sighed. His boss was capable in everything else, why was he so clueless when it came to matters of the heart? Especially with Nina, he always seemed to be at a loss.
Quincy patiently persuaded, “Mr. York, just listen to me this once. Take these flowers and give them to Madam. Girls always want to feel valued.”
“I already humbled myself earlier, wasn’t that enough?” Nash was dismissive, still steaming. “I invited her to dinner, and she stood me up to hang out with her girlfriend. I practically bowed down to her, and still, she won’t give me the time of day. Do I have no dignity?”
“But…” Quincy was at a loss for words, Nash’s anger still not subsided from being stood up. He swallowed his frustration and tried to reason with her, but Nina would not give him a break. This was not his fault. “Throw these flowers in the trash!” Nash found the bouquet obtrusive and stormed off.
He did not go home.
He had invited Nina out to dinner, hoping to surprise her and mend their marriage. He did not want a divorce, but Nina was not receptive.
This left him frustrated, not knowing how to fix things. He thought Nina would be more agreeable.
Given her usually good-natured disposition, he thought a little coaxing would suffice, but nothing seemed to work. He was running out of patience.
He shrugged out of his suit, tossed away his tie, and quickly drank down a large glass of alcohol. The drink went down fast, dribbling from the corners of his mouth. It slid down his throat and soaked into his shirt.
