The director, a woman in her forties with significantly graying hair, looked somewhat old-fashioned. She wore plain clothes and patched shoes, indicative of a modest lifestyle.
Nina nodded. “Yes, I’m here to conduct an interview for you.”
“Please, come in quickly!” The director opened the rusty gate.
Inside, the place was even more run-down. Chalk drawings by the children covered the dirty and cluttered walls. Some tiles had fallen off the walls.
As she stood at the entrance, the children inside looked at her with a mix of curiosity and fear.
“Miss Walker, these are my children,” the director introduced. “Some of them are abandoned, some are orphans, and others have congenital disabilities.” “This is Miss Nina Walker, hurry up and greet Miss Walker,” the director said gently.
There were about twenty or so boys and girls sitting neatly on stools. The girls had their hair braided neatly, looking clean but wearing tattered clothes.
The weather was getting colder, and their little faces turned red from the chill. They looked up at Nina with admiration and said in unison with their adorable voices, “Hello, Nina!”
Nina’s heart melted as soon as she saw the children. They were all so adorable. But they had grown up without parents, and perhaps, being pregnant herself, she felt an extra sense of empathy for these children.
“Nina? You should call me Miss Walker,” Nina corrected them.
“But Nina, you look like a sister to us, and you’re so pretty!” exclaimed a little girl sitting in the front.
“Nina is so pretty!” echoed the others.
Nina smiled faintly and took out some candies from her bag to share with them. “You all have such sweet mouths and are so well-behaved. Here’s a reward for you!” “Wow, candy!” The children’s eyes lit up at the sight of the candies, and they clapped their hands in excitement. Having candies to eat was the highlight of their day.
After distributing the candies, the director commented, “Miss Walker, you’re too kind to spend money like this.”
Nina looked at the director and replied, “It’s nothing, just some small gifts.”
The director smiled and said, “It’s evident that you are a kind-hearted person.”
Nina simply responded, “I just want to help them.”
Nina got a general understanding of the situation. The three-story building had to house fifty children, aged three to ten. The younger ones were packed into rooms with more kids, making it pretty crowded. Resources were scarce. They received some supplies from above and relied on donations from kind-hearted individuals.
However, even with these contributions, they lived on a tight budget. The children had not eaten meat in a month, and when they did, the portions were so small that meat was a luxury for them. It was no wonder they looked so thin.
