In Nina’s perspective, she could not allow herself to affect others. Though she did not always succeed, within her capabilities, she had to make it happen.
“You’re not him, so why do you think you’re holding him back?” Yvonne remarked again. “It’s the modern era now with emotional freedom and marital freedom. Don’t confine yourself. So what if you have a child? You’ll still be living together in the future. Besides, he doesn’t mind. Why do you? You’re just too considerate, always afraid of others being at a disadvantage, while they consider it a blessing!” Nina looked at Yvonne. Their views on relationships were different. Yvonne was carefree, true to herself. When it was time to break up, she did it without feeling indebted. But Nina was different. “I don’t like him enough,” Nina told her.
Yvonne did not see it as an issue. “You haven’t even dated. How can you be sure you won’t like him? Love can grow over time.”
“What if I let him down?” Nina pondered deeply. ” Relationships should be approached with care. I can’t afford to hurt anyone. Today, I’m with him out of gratitude, but tomorrow, I might part ways with him for the same reason. I can’t promise him a future, so I shouldn’t give him false hope.”
Upon hearing this, Yvonne sighed heavily, shaking her head. “Live in the moment. Worrying about the future is too far-fetched. You shouldn’t tie yourself down to one man for your entire life. Amicable separations are common. What truly matters is that you once had each other.”
Yvonne made a valid point. However, everyone had their own reasoning. Nina was the kind of person who, when she liked someone, immediately envisioned the future. Just like her feelings for Nash, she immediately thought about marrying him and having children. It was a challenging process, and the outcome was not ideal, but she had indeed considered it.
Yvonne grasped her hand and placed it on her belly. “Nina, think about it. If you lose Nash, you’ll have a chance for a new relationship. Even without Scott, there will be another man. Your child isn’t a hindrance. I believe a man who truly loves you will accept your child.”
Many times, Yvonne would offer her guidance. Nina’s mind weighed heavily. She was clinging stubbornly to numerous fixed beliefs, making it difficult to let go of anything.
Her gaze shifted to Scott outside the door. He had been standing there without leaving. Upon closer thought, how many people in her life had treated her well?
“For all these years, Scott has been abroad. You might think my art exhibition was your first meeting, but he did try to reach out to you before. Did you know?” Nina’s gaze returned to Yvonne’s face. “Really?”
“Nina, your attention has always been on Nash, you never thought about the fact that Scott came back to see you.” Yvonne could not help but mock her for being too focused. “It’s been a long time, probably since you were in high school. He knew you had been through a life-threatening experience and was worried about you, so he flew back overnight. But you two didn’t meet.”
“Why not? If he came back to find me, why didn’t he meet me?” Nina asked.
Yvonne tapped her forehead. “You’re clueless. It’s because you only have eyes for Nash!”
Nina had never realized any of this. She had not even noticed that Scott liked her, let alone anything else.
“Nina, sometimes I admire your loyalty, but other times I feel you’re clueless about relationships,” Yvonne criticized her. “How could he have the courage to appear in front of you knowing you’ve developed feelings for someone else? He wouldn’t even mention liking you. Dealing with emotions requires a lot of courage. Just like your feelings for Nash all these years, when did you ever let him know?”
