She doubted the truth of his words. “How can I trust what you’re saying?”
“What would I gain by lying to you?” Wilfred looked at the desk. “Here are the records of Miranda seeking my help. You can see for yourself.”
Nina picked up the medical records and reviewed them. Indeed, it showed Miranda had come to him for help.
The regular doctors could not cure her, but he could. His medical skills seemed impressive. He was capable of inducing and restoring hearing loss. Everything fit.
“You know the truth now, aren’t you afraid for your life?” Wilfred had moved close to her, his words dropping from above.
Nina looked up at him, genuinely feeling a bit panicked. This man’s background was unknown, and she was in his territory. Dying here was not out of the question. Still, she had mustered the courage to follow him in.
She glanced at the surgical tools on the table, instinctively clenching her fists. She feared he might actually harm her. “You must have gained a lot from helping Miranda. I can offer you double whatever benefits you received from her. There’s no need for bloodshed. Everything can be negotiated. I value my life and hope you can grant me this chance.”
Wilfred leaned on the desk, lowering himself, and coldly said, “One should never lose their integrity.”
Nina grew more nervous, her eyes fixed on his fingers, fearing he might grab a surgical knife and attack her. She was nervous but she had to negotiate. Clutching the medical records tightly, she was determined to clear Zoe’s name. “I…”
At that moment, Wilfred chuckled softly.
Nina was taken aback.
Wilfred moved away from her and sat down across the table. “In fact, I’ve never been one for integrity.”
Despite his words, Nina’s heart tightened. Whether he was being truthful or not, it did not benefit her in any way. Someone as unpredictable as him could easily betray her at any moment.

Wilfred’s gaze fixed on her and he smiled slightly. “That’s my name.”
She stared at him for a few seconds, realizing he genuinely wanted her to know his name. She nodded. “Got it.”
She quickly exited.
Wilfred did not move, watching her until she disappeared from sight. Then he tilted his head back and laughed out loud. In the empty room, the eerie laughter echoed, creating a terrifying and sinister atmosphere.
As Nina stepped outside, just as she descended the stairs, she was grabbed by a hand. Already on edge, she instinctively struck out with both hands at the unexpected contact.
