Scarlett could not understand.
She had worked with Wilfred for so many years, but she had never seen him like this before.
Wilfred did not say anything. He placed Nina in the back seat, then drove away without looking back.
Scarlett watched his car leave, feeling a twinge of sadness. He did not even explain himself to her. Had he really become indifferent to life and death?
But she could not just watch him throw his life away.
Scarlett clenched her fists tightly, calming herself down before releasing her grip. She then casually brushed her red hair as if nothing had happened, got into her car, and left the scene. Wilfred took Nina straight home.
Since he did not know the code to her apartment, he carried her into his own home.
He laid her on the sofa. After ensuring she was not injured, he sat quietly beside her, waiting.

He waited like this, doing nothing.
About an hour later, Nina woke up.
Her neck hurt terribly.
Her first reaction was remembering someone in the taxi hitting her.
She jolted awake immediately.
“You’re awake,” Wilfred said as soon as he noticed her stirring.
Seeing Wilfred, Nina instinctively jumped up, leaning back and eyeing him warily. “What do you want?”
She had always been cautious of Wilfred.
From the taxi to seeing him now, she could not help but suspect he was in cahoots with that female driver. Seeing Nina’s distrust, Wilfred’s expression showed a hint of sadness. “You’re safe now. There’s no danger.”
Nina looked around and realized she was in a room with the same layout as her apartment.
It must be next door, in Wilfred’s apartment.
“I didn’t know your apartment code, so I brought you here.”
Wilfred’s room was simple.
Everything was white and minimalistic, devoid of any homely warmth. Apart from the smell of disinfectant, it lacked any sign of life.
She looked back at Wilfred, her suspicion growing. “Why am I in your apartment? I was in a taxi. I remember a female driver. What’s your relationship with her?”
Her persistent questioning was exactly what Wilfred least wanted to address. It would not benefit her to know.
He hoped their relationship could be pure, without so much suspicion and doubt.
The best approach was either not to lie to her or not to answer at all.
Wilfred smiled gently, “I brought you back. You’re safe now, relax.”
Nina could not relax. “You still haven’t answered my question. What’s your relationship with her? How could it be such a coincidence that I was in the taxi and you were there?” These points did not add up.
It was hard not to suspect that Wilfred had ulterior motives for approaching her.
She had considered this possibility but did not want to think too badly of him, so she had not voiced it.
This time, she could not tolerate it.
Wilfred’s hand absentmindedly touched the beads hanging from his wrist. “I followed you the whole way. You just didn’t notice me.”
“Is that all?” Nina asked, skeptical.
Wilfred met her gaze, calm and unbothered. “Not just that.”
Nina looked into his eyes, sensing that he would not harm her.
For a moment, she could not tell if he was a good person or a bad one.
She was indeed unharmed.
But Wilfred was certainly not simple, and her caution was justified. “You know that woman, right? She wanted to hurt me, and you saved me. How do I know this isn’t some elaborate trick?”
