It was filled with despair, and there were screams.
A pair of warm hands held her, whispering softly in her ear, “Don’t be afraid. I will get you out of here.”
Then another pair of cold hands grabbed her, asking, “Have you ever seen sunlight? What does it feel like?”
She could not see their faces. In that dark house, it was impossible to make out their faces. She could only hear the voices.
“Ivy… I will make sure you see the sunlight.”
“Miranda-”
Nina’s eyes flew open in terror, her breathing rapid. She clenched her hands tightly, her body drenched in cold sweat. As she regained consciousness, she found herself still in the cramped, dark space. Trembling, she clutched her head and screamed, “No—”
The car came to a sudden halt.
Nina’s scream had reached the ears of those in the vehicle, causing them to stop instinctively.
They thought they had misheard.
“Did you hear that?” Scarlett asked.
“I think so. Could she have woken up?” her assistant said.
The assistant was a tall, skinny man with an ordinary appearance and dark skin. He spoke English awkwardly.
“Impossible,” Scarlett said. “I gave her a strong dose of the drug. She shouldn’t wake up so soon!”
The car started moving again, but suddenly five military vehicles appeared ahead of them.
Scarlett realized something was wrong and shouted, “Quick, turn around!”
Her assistant slammed on the gas pedal and sharply turned the steering wheel, quickly heading in the opposite direction.
The road was empty.
Except for their car, there were only the five military vehicles.
She could not help but suspect they were here to rescue Nina!
Having gone to such lengths to capture her, there was no way they would give up. If Nina did not die, then she and Wilfred would. “What’s going on?” the assistant said. “It’s just one woman. Is it necessary to mobilize so many people?”
They had committed crimes before, but it had never been this tense and nerve-wracking.
Scarlett thought about Wilfred’s indulgence towards Nina. “This woman might not be ordinary.”
She did not know much about Nina, only that she was very special to Wilfred.
She did not understand the reason behind it. It was the first time she had seen him act like this.
“They’re getting closer. What do we do?” The assistant was slamming the gas pedal.
Scarlett furrowed her brows. “Keep driving fast. I’ll hold them off!”
She pulled out a handgun from her waist.
The assistant, seeing this, warned, “Are you crazy? Those are five military vehicles. If you fire, they’ll turn us into Swiss cheese!” “We have no choice. We must take her back!” With nothing left to lose, they had to take a chance.
“Bang!”
Scarlett opened the car door and fired a shot at the pursuing vehicles.
The military vehicles were bulletproof, so they sustained minimal damage.
Then, “Bang! Bang! Bang!”
Several shots hit their car windows.
“This won’t work. We can’t take on five vehicles. We need backup!” the assistant said.
“I know. I’ve already called for help,” Scarlett replied.
Despite the situation, she did not dare act recklessly, trying to buy time instead. “Bang!”
A shot hit their tire.
The car skidded, nearly flipping over, but the assistant’s driving skills kept it steady.
“What now?” the assistant asked.
Scarlett decided to take a gamble, gripping the handle tightly. “Keep going, faster!”
The military vehicles steadily closed the distance.
“Captain York, we’ve blown out one of their tires, but they’re not stopping,” reported the man in the camouflage uniform next to Nash.
Nash sat inside, his eyes fixed on the car ahead, a serious look on his face.
The people with him were all his former comrades.
