Chapter 535
She clung tightly to Nash’s clothes, too afraid to look back, fearing the worst.
Then she heard Nash’s deep voice in her ear, “It’s okay. Don’t be afraid. We’ll be safe soon.”
His words gave Nina the strength to hold on.
“As long as you’re okay, that’s good!” Nina said frantically.
“Captain York!” the man in the camouflage uniform shouted anxiously.
During the gunfight, they had been blocked and could not move forward. Only Nash had made it through.
They tried to cover him as best they could but did not know his exact situation.
They were worried about whether Nash had been injured.
Nash handed Nina over to them and said, “Let’s get out of here first!”
They could not stay there any longer.
Sawyer and his group decided to retreat as well, knowing that prolonged chaos would attract more attention.
Several vehicles kicked up dust as they sped away.
Nina and Nash’s group got into their vehicles as well.
Nina sat in the car, feeling safe now, but her heart was still racing.
Everything had happened so quickly, she had not had time to process it. She clung to Nash’s sleeve, repeatedly asking, “Are you okay? Really okay?”
Nash sat upright, placing his hand on Nina’s to reassure her. “I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
Nina’s eyes widened as she stared at Nash’s face, noticing how pale he looked.
His silence made her uneasy, and she felt something was wrong.
Then she felt something wet on her hand and smelled the strong scent of blood.
Her hand began to tremble as she realized the awful truth.
Her worst fear had come true!
She loosened her grip on his sleeve and saw her hand covered in blood.
She had never seen so much blood before!
He had been holding it in the whole time.
Panicked, she frantically searched for his wound and found a gunshot wound in his left chest, bleeding profusely.
“How can you say you’re fine!” Nina pressed her hand against his chest to stop the bleeding. “You’ve been shot! You’ve been shot, do you understand?”
Nash did not want her to worry, so he had kept quiet.
He endured the pain and gently moved her hand away, saying softly, “As long as you’re okay. We’ll go to the hospital and it’ll be fine.”
“To the hospital, quickly!” Nina shouted, her voice filled with urgency.
The car sped down the road.
Nash leaned back, trying to relax but cold sweat covered his body. He held Nina’s trembling hand, continuously reassuring her, “Don’t panic. Take care of your health.”
He did not want her emotional state to affect her physically, especially since she was pregnant.
Nina stared at his face, her eyes filling with tears again. “Are you crazy? Why did you do this? They were trying to kill you! Why didn’t you listen?”
Nina thought to herself, “He should not have come.” In an instant, Nina broke down, tears streaming uncontrollably.
“If I hadn’t come, what would you have done? How could I just watch you fall?” Nash said, wiping away her tears, though they kept falling. “Don’t cry. You’ll ruin your pretty face.”
Nina shook her head, unable to believe he had risked everything to save her. “I didn’t want this. Now I owe you even more. How can I ever repay you?”
“You don’t need to repay me,” Nash said.
“How can you say that?” Nina choked out. “It’s easy for you to say. If anything happens to you, I’ll feel guilty for the rest of my life.”
