She looked at Scarlett lying in the hospital room, thinking Scarlett might have the answers. Nina sat quietly, opened her phone, and checked for information online.
The road explosion had made the news immediately, given the connected world they lived in. People were discussing it everywhere, creating a sense of panic.
The official announcement simply stated that an anti-crime operation had begun, with no details provided.
She asked Kate about it. Kate explained that to avoid public panic, details would only be released once the operation concluded successfully.
This meant that the current calm could be the precursor to a larger storm. The operation wasn’t over, which likely meant Nash was still on duty.
Nina furrowed her brows, feeling the complexity of the situation. Who was the real target of this operation?
Looking outside, everything seemed calm. Compared to the chaos she witnessed at the scene, the hospital felt much more serene. At mealtime, James showed his concern by bringing food for Nina.
“Ma’am, you’ve been here all day. You should eat something,” James said, placing the food on the table, carefully opening the containers, and setting out utensils for her.
Nina looked at him and asked, “Don’t you find it strange?”
“What?” James asked, puzzled, thinking there might be something wrong with the food.
“Even though Nash and I are divorced, you keep calling me ‘Ma’am.’ Do you think Nash and I will get back together? Who gave you that confidence? Was it Nash?” Nina asked sharply. “Sawyer has been captured, but your operation isn’t over yet. Is Nash still on a mission?”
James was taken aback by her direct questions, unsure which one to answer first. He felt even more overwhelmed.
“Ma’am… I mean, Miss Walker,” James quickly corrected himself. “The food is here. Please eat.”
James wanted to escape the conversation, finding it harder than being in combat. Psychological battles weren’t his forte, and lying wasn’t his strength either.
“Stop!” Nina called after him.
James felt desperate, almost wanting to call for backup.
“Why are you so nervous?” Nina asked. “I’m just asking questions, and you’re acting like this. It makes me think I’m right. You don’t want me to know the truth, or rather, Nash doesn’t want you to tell me.”
James turned back and said, “I don’t understand Captain’s thoughts. I really don’t know anything.”
His tight-lipped response left Nina with no choice but to let him go. She decided not to press him further.
After this encounter, James avoided coming into the room unless necessary. He preferred standing guard outside rather than stepping in.
As evening approached, Scarlett finally showed signs of movement. Her fingers twitched slightly, capturing Nina’s full attention. “Scarlett,” Nina called her name.
Scarlett was exhausted, wanting to sleep. Hearing her name, she tried to focus and slowly opened her eyes, seeing Nina’s face. She felt a surreal sense of awareness, her voice rough and weak. “Where am I? Am I not dead?”
“Of course, you’re not dead. You survived!” Nina said, gently touching her face to give her warmth. Scarlett managed a faint smile. “That’s good. I feel warm. It’s not cold anymore, but it does hurt a bit…”
